TOS wrote computers as intelligent in 1968 (The Ultimate Computer, which aired less than a month before 2001: A Space Odyssey).

And is is never a good thing. Heinlein was positive abut AI. I like that about him.

Discovery has more AI issues because AI is actually an issue in our current life. Computers are no longer distant giant lumps of metal. They are on the desk and in your pocket, and listening. Siri, Alexa, and others.

The principle that Science Fiction is more about the time in which it is written.

It's not much of an extrapolation to assume that the duotronic machines had a fraction of the intelligence of the multitronic machines. How much, we don't know, but Kirk and his ilk would likely kneecap it as much as possible. TOS also introduced us to the flirty computer 50 years before Calypso.

Of course, disregarding real life for a moment, we now know that TOS is ten years after Star Trek: Discovery, which had its slew of AI problems and solutions, and gives us more backstory to work off of and develop the history of TOS computing.

Honestly, I like Discovery illustrating that there was more suspicion of AI, and Kirk's adventures would only add to that skepticism, from the EXO III androids, Mudd's robots, as well as the M5. And that would only further concerned by the presence of the Borg and rogue AIs like Lore, Data's ability to go rogue, and the various other machines that caused troubles over the years. Why would AI be trusted, just based upon experience?

Given that history perhaps Data and the Doctor's remarkability are actually well suited in the context of the story.

Be glad you weren't a part of the shipping community in the Potterverse... we had names for ships. Harry/Ginny was Orange Crush, for instance. Harry/Ron was Best Mate. Neville/Hermione was Forget & Remember... there were hundreds of them, conventional and bizarre alike.

And Harry/Hermione was "Harmony" and their love felt like "Golden Water" according to a certain, infamous fanfic writer

We knew it as "Pumpkin Pie", because a certain famous (or infamous) fanfic had them share a kiss at Christmas that tasted like... you guessed it, pumpkin pie. But we had a club named HARMONY, and another named RHYTHM. HARMONY supported the Ron/Hermione pairing, and RHYTHM thought it was a disaster.

Getting back to Trek, calling ships by their combined names might conflict with possible transporter combinations. A Tuvok/Neelix ship could be Neevok, while transport combo would be Tuvix.

Speaking as a fan fic person... trust me, y'all... just when you think you've truly seen and read (and written, ahem - lol) everything, something else comes along that leaves you... intrigued but ultimately with no choice other than read/write.

My wife has a 150 part (if not longer) Hobbit fic that she has been working on for years. We have read a lot. And seen a lot...some things just are...indescribable..

A friend of mine once wrote a Picard/Elrond fic that even made it into a "the weirdest fic pairing ideas" list some website did. I beta'ed the Jean-Luc part of the fic back then and was ridiculously proud of this. So yeah, LOTR universe fic can get... interesting. Your wife is definitely on to something there.

That's seriously impressive, and it's got me beat. As an individual, that is. I worked on something called "The GPers go to Hogwarts", a collective fanfiction project. It went over 700 chapters, with about 20 authors. Unfortunately, after 6 years or so, the series ended and interest waned. I still remember writing the last chapter.

That's seriously impressive, and it's got me beat. As an individual, that is. I worked on something called "The GPers go to Hogwarts", a collective fanfiction project. I might have the length wrong so I will clarify. Yup, way off on my estimation.

Part 1: 110 chapters long.
Part 2: Currently 43 chapters long.

So, I apologize for getting the terminology wrong. She's been working on it since 2013, off and on, and writing her own original book.

I'm not a shipper nor do I read much fanfic, but I was recently watching "Skin of Evil" and the teaser features a nice little scene between Worf and Tasha.

I think they could have made a good couple if she hadn't been killed off. I checked out the Archive of Our Own site, and was disappointed that there was but a single fanfic featuring that pairing: https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Worf*s*Tasha Yar/works

I could see a Worf/Tasha pairing. She's one of the women who would find him (as Guinan said) "tame". Certainly better than Worf/Troi (I actually confess that I liked the Riker/Troi pairing).

Worf/Tro never made sense and even my passing understanding of the characters found Worf/Troi completely weird in "Parallels" and "All Good Things." Riker/Troi was pretty much painfully obvious from the beginning, and as subtle as a propane truck being spotted in the middle of a volcano. You'll know it when it happens.

Worf/Yar makes far more sense than almost any other relationship in Star Trek.
