Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler-heavy speculation thread

I didn't realize that about Carole.
When I wrote my other post, I had forgotten that Marvel got the X-Men rights back from Fox.
What exactly are the rules regarding the characters from the Netflix shows? If Marvel wanted they could just start the show right back up on Hulu with Season 4 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones ,and Season 3 of Iron Fist, The Punisher, and Luke Cage or would they have to start over?

 

I think Netflix just had an exclusive distribution deal for the shows that's now expired (or will soon, I forget). Marvel is the owner of the shows, and thus it seems to me that they're entitled to do what they want with them.

There have been quite a few cases of a show cancelled on one network being picked up by another, e.g. Get Smart, Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Futurama, Mystery Science Theater 3000, etc. Not to mention all the shows that Netflix itself has picked up after they were cancelled by commercial networks, like Lucifer and The Expanse (and MST3K again). No reason the same couldn't happen in reverse.

 

OK, I knew about those shows that had changed networks, but I thought Netflix produced the Marvel shows themselves, so that was why I wasn't sure.

 

Nope, they were produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios. Netflix just distributed.

Indeed, I think that's part of why they cancelled the shows. Once Disney decided to start its own streaming service, Netflix didn't think it was getting enough profit from the shows to justify promoting the work of a competitor.

 

Weird, I thought Netflix DID help produce those shows. That's why they couldn't outright mention the Movie characters more, because Netflix would have to pay to mention them.

 

Well, the divisions are a moot point now that Disney has regained the movie rights to the X-Men characters back again. Although it kind of makes more sense to introduce the various alien species in the cosmic portion of the MCU instead of the seemingly unrelated (to the general viewing audiences) mutants portion.

 

Wasn't it more like Disney wanting to consolidate all Marvel properties under their own umbrella? Why outsource some projects and allow a competitor to make some profit if they don't have to?

Personally i would love the Netflix Marvel shows to return with the original cast and production crew - for the most part they were amazing ( especially Daredevil and Punisher) but too mature/gory for Disney+. It's an extreme long shot but i hope Disney decides soon to continue them elsewhere but i'm not holding my breath.

In general MCU news i'm quite happy that Marvel is coming back full force to the screen since 2020 went belly up for the most part. Wandavision is proving to be a hit, Falcon and Winter Soldiers could be awesome judging by the trailers and the movies will start again soon. Didn't know i missed the MCU so much.

 

No, it was Netflix's choice to end the shows. If they'd wanted to continue their distributing contract, I don't know if it would've been that easy for Disney/Marvel to break it -- like how Marvel was unable to get the X-Men rights back from Fox until Disney bought the entire company.

After all, the broadcaster that airs a show is essentially the customer of the studio that makes it. They pay the studio for the right to broadcast the show. As long as the network or streamer is willing to pay, the studio benefits from that, so why unilaterally break the deal? Indeed, if you pay good money for the broadcast rights to a show, that probably comes with a clause saying that the seller can't arbitrarily renege on the deal as long as you're still willing to pay. It's only fair to expect to get what you pay for.

But Netflix calculated that the boost in subscriptions they were getting from the Marvel shows was not great enough to justify the cost they were paying for the right to air the shows. They weren't making enough of a profit from them, and they would've been essentially free advertising for Disney+, a competitor. So it was no longer in Netflix's interest to pay for those shows.

 

They might be too adult for Disney+, but they'd be fine on Hulu.

 

Yeah, they would be my guesses too.

^Kind of non-news really given we've known this for the last few years. Unless Disney/Marvel Studios announce they're actually going to do something with them, there's not much to talk about. Indeed unless I've missed something the Daredevil/Spider-Man 3 & Jessica Jones/She-Hulk rumours are still just that.

 

I have to admit, I am curious how She-Hulk is going to handle the title character herself. Tatiana Maslany is a great actress, but she's not that Hulkish.
I did come up with one actress I'm familiar with who has more of the She-Hulk look. Raga Ragnars, from Vikings, who's 6'2" and, compared to Tatiana Maslany, who's only 5'4".

 

I am gonna guess that her She-Hulk will be similarly cgi‘ed as the Hulk.
Her facial features will look like Tatiana, otherwise mo-cap acting.

 

I assume it would be in the vein of the Dan Slott and Charles Soule comics runs that focused mainly on Jennifer Walters working as a lawyer in her human form, for which Maslany is a pretty good physical match. Her Hulk-outs would no doubt be performance capture, as the previous poster said.

 

Mark Ruffalo ain't exactly Hulkish, either, and they somehow made it work.

 

Yeah, none of the Banner actors have been very Hulkish.

Yup, which is why Maslany not being Hulkish is a non-starter.
