The Inevitable TOS Reboot

Uhura is one of the three main characters in the Abrams movies, and I'd expect this group to carry that through to a new TV series.

I don't see TOS being rebooted except as the mother of all reboots--a total wipe of everything that came before, including what's on now and what's currently in the works. I think that will eventually happen, but after Trek has gone out of production for awhile for whatever reason.

And it sounds likely that a younger Kirk will emerge as a character at some point on SNW.

Well, they kind of need to have a younger Kirk cast regardless, if there is an intent to show the Mirror Universe in SNW. As it can operate as a prequel to “Mirror, Mirror”.

I think if there is a TOS reboot, then taking the best of S1-3, plus the planned episodes for TOS S4 & S5, plus live action version of TAS episodes would be the way to go. Maybe even show a younger version of Decker & Illa in the final season.

Oh, if they follow the original series at all it'll be in very broad strokes, bringing in familiar characters in new ways and incorporating bits and pieces of the old stories.

There's no way it will be literally a redo of TOS. It'll be a modern version of Kirk's five-year mission, with new storylines and an entirely different feeling than the 60s version.

So I don't hear whining about real Star Trek and precious continuity any more.

Makes way for new continuity to follow and complain about. I'm afraid there is no escape. Reminds me of this old wise tale.

A hungry nerd in the apocalypse asks a hunter if he can go hunting with him because he is starving and hasn't eaten in days.

The hunter says "No!. You will spend the entire hunt talking about whether or not Seven of Nine's parents knowing about the Borg before Best of Both Worlds messed with canon and stuff like that in a loud animated voice."

The nerd says. "But I need food like you. I haven't eaten in days. Trust me."

The hunter gives in and lets the nerd come along. They see two deer. Enough to feed them for a week. Well the nerd flips out and gets agitated and loudly proclaims "Burnham can't be Spock's sister. Show me one scene in TOS were it makes sense!" The deer get startled and run away from both of them.

The hunter is like. "Why did you do that? We needed them for food. We are going to starve now."

The nerd sadly retorts. "It's in my nature."

I wonder what will air in 2066...
Normally I'd try to hazard a guess, but in this case...

... It's impossible to say. It would be like someone in 1976 wondering about what would be airing in 2021. If there's any new Star Trek in 2066 -- emphasis on IF -- some parts of it would probably be recognizable to us while other parts would be completely unrecognizable. There's no way to know which parts would fall into which category.

As for when something like that will happen, who knows? As for what I'd be looking for if it were to happen...

Episodic vs Serialized - It seems very clear, in the wake of a binge-watching culture perpetuated by streaming services, serialized is the way is should go if done today, but these things are probably cyclical and the real answer is that it depends where the viewing audience is and is moving to on this question when/if something like this is made.

Retelling old stories - I find the concept of doing that rather boring. It's already been done, don't re-do it unless you really think it can be done better.

One of the things that resonated with me in the DS9 documentary was when Ira Behr, (I believe in reference to what Michael Piller had told him) was that plot existed to explain and reveal character. That really is the difficult task here in a reboot. What can we reveal about these characters that hasn't been over the course of 50+ years? The situations and new characters you put them in/with really tell the story. The TOS characters are the reactors to what's happening around them. A good story reveals those people and in the process has a message about the human story.

What do you want to say in rebooting TOS... to the audience, about the audience, about the people of today and the future and their relationships to one another? What's the core of the message and the story you want to tell? Answer that question, and then you can see how that narrative fits into the TOS characters and their universe.

Not answering those questions first is nothing more than a nostalgia-Trek looking for a reason to exist that it may or may not ever find. TNG started out like that, even using unproduced TOS and Phase II scripts, but was fortunate to find its own unique voice afterward. Not every show is so lucky, or given as much time to find itself - especially today.

Just my 1 cent. I'm cheap, I'll save the other cent for later ;)

Personally I just can't see a TOS reboot happening anytime soon, since it really seems like Strange New Worlds is going to be filling the slot for that type of show. It would be redundant. Plus the last Kelvinverse movie was only 5 years ago. Anything is possible in Hollywood (after all, we've had 3 different Spider-Man franchises in less than a decade), but the Trek universe is such a huge sandbox to play in with so many stories to tell. A TOS reboot seems like such a huge step backwards to me.

Anybody remember that bit from the Simpsons years ago where they did Star Trek XII: So Very Tired and when the Klingons attack, Kirk just sighs and says "Again with the Klingons"? That would probably be my reaction to the announcement of another TOS reboot. Again with Kirk & co.?

A TOS reboot will most likely be part of Strange New Worlds or after it. I rather Kirk take over the command of the Enterprise base on Pike getting injure, then tranferring command.

It was just rebooted 11 years ago, and Strange New Worlds is supposed to fill the episodic adventure void, and we now have 7 or 8 shows set in the TOS/TAS/TNG/DS9/VOYAGER/ENTERPRISE timeline so I don't see this happening anytime soon.

Rebooting from Strange New Worlds actually makes a lot more sense to set it up.

And there is no reason that just because 11 years ago doesn't preclude the possibility of a reboot.

Wasn't Spiderman rebooted twice in one decade, or something like that?

I still don't think they'll reboot TOS because they've invested so much time in universe-building around it with all these new shows. However, there is a simple fix. Everyone says Kirk can't be on SNW because of his line in The Menagerie that he met Pike seemingly only once (when he made Fleet Captain). Simply put: Kirk lied to cover up the fact that he and Pike went on secret covert missions for Starfleet and the Federation aboard the Enterprise. These missions were classified, erased from the records, and everyone was told never to speak about them.

There you have it: Kirk in Strange New Worlds without violating canon.
