Why does it seem like everybody is padding about barefoot?

Has Raffi sunk so low that she's vaping and drinking on duty? I find myself thinking about that exchange from Blazing Saddles:

Even then, Dahj was only barefoot at the start when she was chilling with her boyfriend just before the Romulan strike team beam in. There's no issue being barefoot in one's home, is there? Soji, yeah, she does take her shoes off quite a bit.

Same actress, though, so Dahj contributes to the pattern.

That was another situation of someone just chilling out in their spare time. Indeed, he was only wearing a pair of shorts in that scene.

Technically, Raffi is never seen on duty other than in flashbacks. She doesn't work on Rios's ship. She came along for the ride because Picard was going to the planet where her son lived and she saw it as a chance to reach out to the son, and Rios allowed it because she's his friend and Picard was already paying him to go there, so giving her a lift was no trouble. She came back on board because her son rejected her, not because it was her job, and again, Rios let her come back because she's his friend, not because she works for him. She doesn't. She helps out along the way, but she is a passenger, not a crew member. So she isn't vaping and drinking on duty, she's vaping and drinking on her own time, which happens to include the time she spends helping out on the ship she's travelling aboard.

Whether doing so is wise or safe is another subject entirely...

And yeah, as noted above, the characters weren't all wandering around barefoot all the time. Some of them chose to do so during their downtime, but so do I, so what of it? Soji was barefoot for a while because she was told to take her shoes off to perform that Romulan ritual with Narek, and then the ritual ended in attempted murder, so she had to run for her life without any time to reclaim her shoes!

I'm gonna start off by saying I really enjoyed the series, so if this sounds overly negative, I'm not bashing the show at all. Just some observations.

Firstly, I've been desperate for a follow up ST series set after Nemesis (mostly because they can't really fuck with canon too much) *cough*Discovery*cough* but this wasn't quite it for me. It was amazing to have Patrick back on our screens and to have cameos from Brent, Jeri, Jonathan & Marina but I kinda wish they'd released another series to go alongside it that features a Starfleet crew on a Starfleet vessel doing what Starfleet does (maybe with a nod to Riker leading Starfleet into battle in an episode).

I'm really looking forward to when we can have season 2 but, if I'm being honest here, it's mostly to see who pops up next. We know Guinan will be along at some point but I'd love to see Worf, Beverley and Geordi too. It'll be good to see which direction they take us in next but god I want them to stop with the prequel shite at every turn.

I'd be glad to see Geordi or Beverley Crusher return in season 2.There's the new Picard book The Dark Veil by James Swallow. That we get the back story of Will Riker and Deanna Troi and their son Thad aboard the Titan. The story takes place one year after the Mars attacks in Season one of Picard ,and fills more of the back of Will Riker and Deanna and the events mentioned about them in Nepenthe.

We've already had six TV shows prior to Picard doing exactly that and following Picard there's been another one released with another in development. No harm at all in Picard doing something different from the usual mold.
You do realize now that Disco is in the 32nd century, it is in fact Picard that is the prequel, right?

DISCO is a prequel series thrown forward in time. There's a difference.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Picard doing something different, just as there's nothing wrong with Lower Decks doing something different. I'm saying a series set during the same time frame as Picard, give or take a few years would be pretty awesome rather than just firing out prequel series that mess with canon. There's no need to get so defensive.

Claiming that the rest of Trek is a prequel to Disco because of time travel to a farther future is like saying that the present of the DC universe is a prequel to the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Part of the etymology of the word "prequel" is that it's a sequel that takes place before preceding installments in the series. Whatever era they set it in, in real world chronology, Disco is following the vast bulk of 23rd and 24th century Trek.

Picard is a sequel to TNG, and to a lesser extent the other 24th century Trek series...Disco, which can't make up its mind what it's supposed to be, is beside the point.

I don't consider Discovery to be a prequel because by the time it's finished, there will be far more seasons set in the 32nd Century than the 23rd. So calling it a "prequel", in the sense that we normally think of it, would make DSC sound like something it's not.

In a similar vein, I don't think of Picard as a prequel either. Technically, PIC might be a prequel to what will eventually be most of DSC but, narratively, calling it that also makes it sound like it's about something it's not. Calling it a "prequel" makes it sound like it's something that leads into Discovery, but PIC is so far removed from DSC Season 3+ or The Burn that it has no beaing on Picard at all. I'm the Hardcore Disco Fan, so trust me. PIC is what it is: a follow-up to TNG, focusing on Picard. That makes it a sequel.

Plus: What if someone in a position of power eventually decides that DSC is just one of many possible futures in Star Trek? Then, suddenly, Picard wouldn't take place before it anymore.

I should've pointed out the Riker reference was a reference to the face-off with the Romulans in Picard. I'm talking about a proper series, not Star Trek:Futurama.

So, a series like what we have had before?

And what isn't "proper" when it comes to a show like Lower Decks? I feel like Alice in Wonderland were there are demands of propriety in polite Trek society yet not allowing for variety.

I was glad to see a series take place after Nemesis myself (in story timeline, the last time Star Trek takes place, of course ignoring Discovery--which is so far in the future that there's probably little risk of contradictions in story).

I'm a continuity junkie, I'll admit, and I like consistency in set design. It's a lot easier to explain changes by putting shows further in the future. I liked Discovery from a story perspective, but it never 'felt' like 10 years pre-TOS--it frankly felt more advanced than TNG-DS9-Voyager.

I liked most of the characters in Picard, except for Jurati.

The biggest disappointment, though, is how the Romulan Supernova is just all but forgotten after the first couple of episodes. Far from being a refugee species, they seem to continue to be a significant force in the quadrant. How does an empire that lost it's homeworld, and apparently many other worlds in its Empire must a 200+ force of advanced ships on par with Starfleet? That threw me for a loop. And nobody, except for a single planet we saw when Picard picks up El Nor, does any Romulans seem particularly less off now than they were before. Hell, they even captured and were rebuilding a Borg cube. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

The average Romulan probably didn't see a massive difference, aside from being relocated (if at all possible) or losing a lot of family, which is probably significantly possible. The actual government and Tal Shiar would have relocated what resources they could to try and maintain their Empire in some measure. So, their ship building resources may not have been as impacted, even though significant loses would have been incurred. And the Romulans were already significantly hampered by the Dominion War and the Shinzon coup. So, the Tal Shiar would have other resources to maintain their own power, and less concerned about the everyday Romulan.
