In an earlier episode Londo referred to his three wives as "Pestilence, Famine and Death." Timov is vomit spelled backwards (famine), Daggair is a slight change in the spelling of Dagger (pestilence) and Mariel is a change in the spelling of Ariel, an angelic name that hides her deadly nature (death). B5 needs a good hair salon.
Yep, I use a NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2080 Super, which gives a conversion rate of 6 or 7 frames per second going from 576p SD to 1080p HD. I don't bother with converting to UHD 4K as that's a lot slower and doesn't seem to improve the picture quality as far as I can tell by eye. Those cards come in at about £800 in the UK so I assume about $720 in the US. The output is H.264 so I do a further conversion to H.265 to save disk space. In the future, I might switch to H.266 when it's more widely supported but the output files I'm getting now are already smaller than the SD source files. The main issue I have is with the occasional crappy deinterlacing that appears to have been used when creating the source files.
Mira Furlan passed away yesterday. JMS has posted a remembrance on social media. Mira herself was also quoted with a brief epitaph by her internet accounts.
That would be extremely sad news, but is it really true? This article says it is an internet death hoax.
It's true. Who are you going to believe, JMS or a fly-by-night website you never heard of before today?
RIP Mira Furlan For all the great female protagonists in sci fi (Ripley, Aeryn Sun, Sarah Connor, etc) I always forget about Delenn from Babylon 5. That is a failing on my part. Furlan brought a sweet ferocity to the role, and it was an amazing story arc all throughout Babylon 5. She will be greatly missed.
The RTX 2080 Super is about $720 in the US. I don't know if the software works with Ryzen graphics cards. Topaz Labs' website specifies using NVIDIA RTX 1080 or better but I think it would be quite slow based on benchmarks. It works on an RTX 1060 or a CPU but is very slow. Topaz Labs are working on supporting distributed processing across the GPUs in a machine that hosts multiple GPUs. ETA: Topaz Labs have just released a new version that includes models trained to deal with interlaced video and other use cases.
Aargh! This is an unpleasant surprise. And she was still very young. Such charisma and screen presence she had, and everything done with that sparkle in her eye. In addition to being a great talent, she was living proof that one need not be hardened by hardship. RIP, Mira Furlan.
Just read about Mira Furlan. Damn, this really sucks. Loved her in Babylon 5 and Lost. She was just a special kind of actress, you could tell from every scene she was in. And now she's gone way too soon. May she rest in peace.
