General Trek Questions and Observations

Just a Trek question...

At the end of Deadlock, Voyager had its full complement, plus two corpses: Naomi Wildman, dead in childbirth, and Harry Kim, killed by decompression. Both corpses, of course, were replaced by their living counterparts from the ill-fated "other Voyager".

So the question is... what did they do with the corpses? Put them in torpedo cases and shoot them into space? Stick them in cold storage? Or just use the transporter to dematerialize them?

According to Star Trek Online, Harrys body was blown (or sucked if Data's listening) into space.

I wonder where Ard'rian McKenzie got the old Battle Droid?

General observation of Burnham getting Tentacled by the Egg Plant Queen.

Was anyone else slightly satisfied to see Burnham get slapped by Osryaa? I think there have been some situations where even Admiral Vance would have felt relieved after watching Burnham get slapped.

There are probably a few times when Saru wished he could have done the same thing.

Will the Programmable Matter that Burnham swallowed after being stuffed in the wall of PM by Osryaa, cause any future medical issues for Burnham?

What did the Programmable Matter learn about her in those few seconds it was inside of her? Or was the Programmable Matter inside of her mouth or stomach for too short of time to cause any lasting issues?

Given that Vance promoted her, I imagine he wouldn't be relieved.

No, she vomited it out. I don't think it'll be a big deal. Plus, with a slight time jump at the very end, she likely had time to get a medical checkup for any outstanding issues from the fight.

I'm curious if that was actually programmable matter in the computer core, or just a regular computer core pinart one would expect from a 23rd century ship? Did Discovery update their computer (probably)? I don't think we ever saw a computer core in Star Trek before.

I'm sure others said that before me at many points.

But considering Star Trek portrayed human-looking aliens as the "default" (like the number of species that look completely human, without any extra bits seem to be in the majority)....shouldn't the Precursors in "The Chase" have looked human as well?

It was a scheme by the founders. Didn't you recognize their representative?

True, but if a mere accident can cause it to create a self aware program then there's some serious stuff going on inside it. Surely this was never thought of when the ship was designed though and it probably wouldn't have entered the designers mind when they built the Enterprise.
The computer is programed to be a computer. It follows it's program to compute. When the computer get a requested to make a sentient being representation is when such occurs. It seems this computer is/has become quite efficient at developing such representations, when given certain parameters. Note: A machine does not require sentience or the 'properties' of it's 'widgets', in order to make them...it just needs a program/ program parameters.

How many more legal fights about whether artificial intelligences deserve equivalent rights to humanoids will the Federation need to have before the judgement sticks?

We don't know if their system is based on precedents like the American system for example so maybe it's not a question of judgment but one of legislation. Not everything star trek needs to be US-inspired. It's supposed to be Earth and even more than just Earth!!!

Fair enough, but that just changes my question to "how many legal fights do they need to have before they just update the relevant laws?"

How many does it take, Admiral?

I guess the problem is in the definition - where to draw the line. They gave Data "the freedom to choose", and gave the EMH the rights of an artist, but not those of a person. The exocomps and nanites were declared sentient life by Picard, but it's not clear if they have any confirmed legal status.

The problem is, when Gene Roddenberry sent to Central Casting for non-human actors, they sent Lassie, Mr Ed and Flipper. A case of working with what you have. All the Humanoids because, all the Humans playing them. The make-up budget was tiny and CGI far in the future.

The Precursors was putting a lampshade on it. The good thing about writing you own stuff is the special effect budget is unlimited.
