Zoom Session to Talk about Star Trek

Lord Garth

Admiral
Admiral
Back in May, I started hosting Zoom Sessions, where we could talk about Star Trek: Picard. We would do one every month, I think, until the end of August, with the season premiere of Lower Decks. That kicked off 23 straight weeks of new Star Trek, ending a few days ago with the end of Discovery's third season.

Since August, we've been doing these Zoom Sessions every week. We've got a regular crew and this thing has taken on a life of its own. More so than what I would've expected when I started this thing. I had other commitments, so, last month, I had @Captain Moe take over the hosting to free me up.

And we all decided that after having these Zoom Sessions for so many months, we want to keep them going. Except instead of talking about the latest Star Trek episode, we'll talk about Star Trek in general. We've already been doing a lot of talk about Star Trek in general anyway, and we'll even talk about stuff that has nothing to do with Star Trek at all. We run the gamut.

If you're interested, we have the Zoom Sessions every Saturday at 7:00pm Eastern Time.
There are also Zoom Sessions where they talk about specific episodes of older Star Trek every Thursday at 6:00pm Eastern Time.

If either one of those interest you, let us know! Or if you're interested but can't do those times, then let us know that too, and we'll work something out to accommodate.

Captain Moe will be posting links when we have a new Zoom Session, and we looking forward to kicking this off! Now I'll hand the mic over to all of you.

Could this be pinned to the top.... usually I am having dinner with the family near that time, but at some point would like to join. So we also need to make sure we add our Trek BbS ID too? :bolian:

You can, but you don't have to.

I do it (just so they see I look like my avatars), but a lot of people don't.

For the Thursday Zoom, I'm not sure. I haven't participated in those. But @Captain Moe can weigh in on that.

For the Saturday thread, we'll be talking about the third season of Discovery as a whole. And touch up on "That Hope Is You, Part 2" a little bit more, since the news was/is kind of crazy and overshadowed things.

We can also play with the time Saturday. We’d been doing 6 PM Eastern for the Thursday meetings, and I’m fine with then or a little earlier for Saturdays, too, if that’s better for people.

Hi All folks

I don't think the Thursday nights are happening anymore, attendance has been pretty low last couple of weeks and now there is no new Trek having two sessions sounds a bit redundant.

If anyone wants to run a mid week one you are more than welcome especially for those that are unable to attend on Saturday night.

For older episodes, I think we should only do one.

And there are some things, where it's like, I'm not a huge ENT Fan. I know @Muji is a fan of it but most of it alternates between "dull" and "okay" for me. Which doesn't exactly make me super-enthused to watch it. A lot of the other episodes I saw listed as the subject of discussion seem like rando episodes.

I think we should go for some heavy-hitters. "City on the Edge of Forever", "The Best of Both Worlds", "In the Pale Moonlight", that sort of thing.

Yeah, part of the thinking there was to watch episodes you wouldn’t necessarily have the wherewithal to revisit on your own. A classic one was “Who Mourns for Adonais” from TOS in a room of mostly non-TOS fans that week. I myself am not the biggest ENT fan, but I watched a handful of those too as the natural flow of conversation lead us through there. It’s great to have differing opinions on the same episodes or series and hear people’s thinking.

I can see the idea behind going for deep cuts, talking about things you normally wouldn't talk about in Trek, but it seems a little too "inside". I think to rope in more people, we should talk about episodes with broader appeal. Episodes where if a poster here hasn't seen the episode in a while and didn't have enough time to re-watch it, they know the episode well enough so that they can still jump in. And then every now and then, work in a deep cut.

But that's only my particular take on it. Others might feel differently. Everyone else, feel free to weigh in too!

I think the Saturday ones are a bit too late for me at the moment. I actually fell asleep mid-call last time. Luckily I had my mic muted! It’s a real shame because we have a nice group there that I considered myself part of, but with Thursdays being ditched I think this is probably the end of the road for me.

I'm going to start a 2.0 version of the weekdays. Temporarily. Don't know when yet.

Covid's on a spike again (as usual), so the stuff I normally do at work at night (recording sports, recording local government meetings) isn't happening. So we're going to talk about kick-ass episodes.

That’s unfortunate. I’ve missed your input the past couple weeks. Would making it an hour or two earlier Saturdays help?

It really would, but I honestly can’t ask or expect the entire meeting to shift for lil’ ol’ me. It would inevitably mean others couldn’t attend, which would be awful on my part. I really wanted to be around these last couple of weeks, but the midnight start time has been a real struggle. I too miss the views, especially yours as you so often offer either an intelligent counterpoint or an articulate affirmation of my own views. Damn this universe with its spinning balls of light.

Earlier Saturday would be better for me too. Others?

Re a weekday meeting, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are out for me and Mondays are iffy.

I have a family with dinner time....so early would work for me... and in fact week day during the day could work even better
