What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

lol...“narrative”

I always just assumed Earths planetary government (or the Federation) would just start...more or less...a cloning program of some kind to insure the species long term survival.

Head canon: Cloning program+ genetic splicing/engineering to ensure viability via a in-vitro fertility problem.

The whales died out before the Federation was made, so they didn't have any intact DNA on hand. Now, they do, and the biologists would be having a field day.

Plus IV actually has a damn good message, a environmental-conservationist one. It fits as a 'trek' film IMO, and a perfect early-mid wave green film in a way.

What do the nu-series propose for us to do? Ride around playing the beastie boys? Another revenge story?

I STILL don't know what the writers were thinking in making Ezri/Julian a thing as others have said, there was no chemistry, no bulid-up, no nothin. They just stumbled into a relationship.
I'm currently rewatching S7 of DS9 on H&I, and that's not true at all. They started laying the groundwork for Julian & Ezri in "Afterimage," the third episode of the season. You may not have spotted it at the time, but it was definitely there.

which scene(s) was it again? The only scene I can remember is opening scene in Emperor’s New Cloak

And her relationship with Worf was solely based on Kurzon liking Klingon culture.
Well IRL some relationships are based solely on liking the other person's bank account and it works. This is love Trek style where there is no money to claim lol

While I like both, Jadzia became super obnoxious with the whole Klingon and Worf thing. It was not enjoyable. Now, I might be biased because Bashier was my favorite character on DS9 and I hated that he and Jadzia didn't get together, one of the few times I've given a crap about a fictional relationship in Star Trek.

Ezri is a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed her journey. So, point to Ezri for being more interesting.

No I don't think so...;)

Controversial Star Trek Opinion:

I don’t need it to be “topical” or have “messages” for it to be enjoyable.

...and containing those elements doesn’t automatically make it better, either.

Yup. The point of a story is what the audience takes away from it not what is being lectured at.

And honestly, I prefer NOT to be lectured by my escapist entertainment.
I am growing more and more tired of it at this point. I was not aware that entertainment should be conveying some particular value that I must participate in in order to be entertained. More than that, it frustrates me further that Star Trek is expected to encourage people in to the sciences and that if it doesn't it is some how deficient.

I don't know about any one else but my interest in science had nothing to do with Star Trek. I liked the rocketships and ray guns not the discussions around how the warp drive works. It's like trying to use Back to the Future as an argument for real world time travel.

It's OK for it just to be entertainment.

The whole thing was built up in the 70s and 80s when Roddenberry kept getting asked questions on the convention circuit and in the media about why Star Trek was so popular. He built the entire narrative about how important and topical and intelligent Star Trek is and how wonderful the fans all are because they’re the only ones who see that and are smart enough to value it.

It’s largely horseshit. Star Trek is popular because it had great characters, is colorful and exciting, and is pretty damn fun to watch. Everybody’s been drinking the Kool-Aid for 50 years about how smart and topical and important it is.

Well, when you put it that way it sounds almost like a cult...

It’s my favorite franchise in the entire world. And it always has been.

But it ain’t because it’s “intelligent” and contains strong allegorical messages that define and shape my personal philosophy.

That’s for damn sure.

Same here. I have a moral and philosophical base outside of my entertainment choices, not because of it.

If you follow the link I included in my comment, it'll take you right to a description of the scene I'm thinking of.
Thanks, I just finished watching the scene and I don't think it really works in terms building a good romance, Julian's attitude comes off (to me at least) as more or less just projecting his feeling abt Jadzia on to her. Plus Ezri's a Counselor(in training) so alot of gestures to me just read as comforting
