I really disliked this one. It was not good.
I cannot believe that the Doctor's first plan was "call in a warship full of elite Daleks to take out the other Daleks." And to murder an innocent TARDIS to do it.
I get that the regenerated Dalek obviously made some alterations to the shells, such as installing death rays, but there really is only so much that he could do before it got caught. What I mean is, there's no way that these new shells were as powerful as a standard Dalek. They weren't made out of dalekanium, for one thing. And there only looked to be 20 of them or so.
Might have seemed a bit more threatening if he had instead installed a way to control all of the shells as drones remotely. One Dalek can download the internet in a few seconds. It must clearly have the intellect to control thousands of drones, or more. Adding in an AI would have been feasible, too.
Any of those story solutions would have made the decision to call in the elite Daleks a better choice.

Was alright. If i hadn't seen any Doctor Who since Martha left, I'd probably have enjoyed it more. Coming twelve seasons in there was very little here that hasn't been done to death many times before. Jack was Jack, the Daleks were the Daleks and the sledgehammer current affairs references were sledgehammer. All watchable but a classic mid season RTD era episode. Not much here to work with regarding how the new season might unfold and the departure of Ryan and Graham seemed rather out of the blue (although welcome, Ryan has been wooden since day one and Graham's arc appeared finished). I'm not convinced on another Graham type joining the tardis, but we'll see what they do with him. I'd have liked to have one companion again for a while.

Overall, didn't hate it, but it was nothing original.

Finally a Whittaker adventure I like (contrivances and all - I just don't care. It was fun) ... and no one else liked it.

I can't win.

Perhaps because I haven't been a fan of Whittaker's run and basically gave up after last season's finale helped. Little investment in the current stable of characters (sorry Bradley - much as I love ya) - just mindless entertainment with some cheesy Captain Jack action and dumb Dalek mayhem was the fix I needed.

Reportedly, Jack was to have stayed on for next season, but Barrowman was in America when travel restrictions came in, so a new character has been created to replace him.

Perfect New Years special. By which, I mean it was one hundred percent made of reheated leftovers, with at least two moments where what you are being served makes no sense whatsoever, but sod it, there’s stuff needs using up. Was there even one original bit in this story? I guess there was a new, one off to make any sense, Dalek design. That’s half original, as it’s the recon butt-plug dalek with shiny lights and a paint job.

I had one, very brief, moment of anticipation... I thought Jodie was going to get a new costume.

It’s *terrible*.

Great seeing Captain Jack.

Otherwise a fairly paint-by-numbers Dalek episode.

Where did you read that and who said it? The reports about John Bishop have all said his inclusion was something Chibnall had been planning for a long time (however long that might be).

I enjoyed this episode. Not brilliant but satisfying. I was really glad to see Captain Jack back in a full episode. Long overdue. Daleks Vs Daleks was great fun but my only issue was that the new type Daleks went down so easily and so quickly. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. With the cost of the redesign and newly made models I'm sure we will (then again, I thought the same about the Daleks from Victory of the Daleks)

Over on Facebook, would have to check who said it. Mainly an observation about how Jack's comment on checking up on Gwen was a dubbed voiceover.

PR is PR. Nobody on the team is going to say "John Bishop is a work round of John Barrowman being unavailable" rather than "John Bishop is a great addition to Who". Even if the former is perhaps the case. Dunno, seems possible.

Yeah, but there's a difference between "He's a great addition" and "This was in the works for a long time, before even the pandemic" (which is closer to what was actually said).

And so your "reportedly" is purely speculation? Yeah, I'll go with PR over Facebook speculation any day. ;)

I'll agree with the meh reactions everyone's giving. Personally, I found the episode was 90% build-up, 7% rushed pay-off and resolved, 3% out of the blue good-bye to Ryan and Graham. I didn't hate the episode, it made for a distracting hour and indeed there's a lot of little moments here and there I quite enjoyed, mostly any scene involving Jack, and the arrival of the "SAS Daleks" to clean up the mess was pretty fun. But in the end, this could have been a lot better, even if I did enjoy it more than I did many episodes from the previous season.

The whole Dalek on Dalek thing really was wasted. Given that there were two Dalek armies on Earth, there was very little jeopardy. All solved nice and neat in short order.

I enjoyed the special more than the average episode of the Chibnall era, and I think part of it was down to how dramaturgically unambitious it was. The last few seasons' biggest missteps have been when the show tried to be about something in some larger sense, and ended up having a deeper meaning that's kind of horrifying. The shallowness and frenetic pace of this episode were, in my eyes, advantages. Chibnall had to put so much energy into keeping the plates spinning he didn't have as much of a chance to try to dig deep and get to the heart of things and, in so doing, blunder into something awful.

That's always the case; takes 10 years at least before you know for sure. Except when Steve was still going to the Tavern, but once he became show runner that stopped.

Yeah...I've been thinking about this all day. Hubby and both liked it well enough, but both of us felt that it was just a bit....tired. A bad case of been there, done that. After all this time, I was hoping for a bit more. I was very pleased to see Captain Jack again; he really livened up an otherwise average episode.

I wanted to expect more but as soon as the trailer showed a prime minister presenting Daleks as a security task force, I knew we were going to be treading very familiar territory. I was only excited for Captain Jack and seeing more of Shada.
