Does Odo have form limitations?

As far as traveling in space, perhaps its too risky for the founders in the Dominion. A ship around them keeps them safer from stray meteors or X-ray exposure. The hundred might risk it because they are young and foolish.

Was thinking about this for a while and a similar question regarding the doctor in the voyager forum prompted this. Why couldn't Odo or any of the other Changelings transform into something incredibly dangerous or monstrous during battles to give their sides a tactical advantage? Are there any limitations to the forms they can take?
It would've been interesting to see Odo mastered the human form by the end of the series since we saw him have an obsession to improve his abilities. By the end that could've been a nice way to have some completion to him.

Yes. But it's sort of creepy. Like one person with hair a certain color and style joins a group and then the entire group dyes and restyles their hair to look just the same.

Wasn't Odo's inability to recreate a human/humanoid face the result of some 'achievement unlocked' situation the Founders built in to him? He could recreate every hair on a rat but not a Bajoran nose?

I wish we lived in a timeline where Rene Auberjonois was still around and could show up in one of these modern Trek shows (Picard in c. 2400, Discovery in c. 3190), sans makeup, and complete his arc that way.

The new shows haven't let the unavailability of the original actor stop them so far...

That is never mentioned, so I don't think so.
Odo just has problems with humanoïde faces that's all.

Do you know this for sure? Or are we just limiting ourselves to one word answers?

Whatever works.

seriously, I believe Odo once said something along the lines of "I don't do faces well."

And given that the primary goal of the Dominion is to bring Odo back to them, there's no reason they would stunt his ability to shapeshift. There's no reason for it. If anything, that would drive him further away.

Well it was for reasons though. They wanted to make clear that Odo is one of them, both to him and to the Alpha Quadrant as a whole.
I think it's likely that outside their dealings with the Alpha Quadrant powers they took completely different shapes when they had to imitate solids (if they even did so).

Great. That's much clearer now that you've elaborated and explained why what I stated doesn't appear to be the case.

Much nicer interaction than 'no' I'm sure you'll agree!

The one thing i really dont get is that the other shapeshifting dude could turn into fog..??
That doesnt make any sense to me.

That shapeshifters could turn into fire is more surprising to me. Flames are gasses heated until they are red- or white-hot. Not too many organisms could recover from parts of their body being heated white hot.

^ did we see that?..i dont remember it. oh yeah, and that plasma-like energy stuff he turned into once...
It certainly doesnt make any sense, i agree.

Odo's ability to transform into flashy gas is quite consistent with his ability to alter his mass - in other words, completely inexplicable!
Or at least it suggests he's a lifeform of a completely different type to our own. Maybe changelings half-exist in a different dimension?
