Indeed. And even then, thought I believe the directives to tone the music down began during TNG's third season. Ironically, one of the show's fan favorite musical cues, the music from the "inform Starfleet we have engaged the Borg" scene in TBOBW only came about reportedly because the composer knew it was his last episode making him free from consequence.

From late-TNG to the end of ENT. Very little stood out.

I find Voyager had catchy music in its action scenes in its later seasons. Unfortunately, they overused it making it become annoying while binge watching.

Tenet did a piss-poor job recording its dialogue anyway, making it difficult to understand what the characters are saying in scenes where there is no music.

Weird complaint. Usually people complain that music in post TOS Trek shows is not bombastic or loud enough.

And I would be one of those. If there's one aspect I truly truly despise about TNG and Berman era Star Trek; it's his edict that the music just be "Sonic Wallpaper"; And that edict annoyed a number of the composers as well. The Borg combat themes from "Best of Both Worlds", for example, was something the composer expected to be fired over - but at that time he didn't care if he worked again on another Star Trek project or not.

It over powers the dialogue. Nothing to do with sound settings. The music never lets up in the episodes.

I don't think you understand sound settings then. Dialogue and music are often on different channels........if your AV equipment isn't matched with your sound settings you could be getting full music track and half the vocals........I leaned this a few years ago when I noticed sound FX would scaring the shit out of me but I could barely hear the voices. I had somehow set the sound for Dolby 5.1 surround but I didn't have a system that could handle that so I was losing most everything else..........might be worth checking.

Bad example, you need subtitles in that movie just to understand wtf they are talking about. And then, it’s not enough. Sometimes you have to read them backwards. I think I liked that movie, or maybe the complete opposite. I have no idea

I tend to like Disco's music, alot better than the Wallpaper variations of the past. Do have a problem of them whispering ocasionally, but its not a big thing.
But saying that, I can't pick out any music that is well remembered like Best of Both Worlds, or The Inner Light, Its a better wallpaper, but somewhat still a non memorable wallpaper.

When I watched Elementary I had to crank up the volume on the tv to hear the dialogue because it was too low. The music was loud and so were the gun shots. Other shows on CBS didn’t have the problem. Not sure what the problem was. I tried it on other TVs and still the same problem. I’ve watched Discovery on tv and on my phone and I’ve never noticed the music over powering the dialogue.

I always thought that Berman just had a tin ear for music.

I think the music is one of DSC’s greatest assets... what Jeff is doing is amazing.... he has interwoven all these little recurring themes, some of which hardly anyone will notice, but I personally love it...!

True, but it's not the choice of music that bothers me. It's the choice to have music practically the entire time. I believe the last episode, like many the other episodes, had music 100% of the time -- or close to it. There have been a couple of scenes this season where there was no music and just dialogue for a short while, but it is very rare. At least one violin or something accompanies practically all dialogue all the time.

Like I said in another post, I can usually ignore the fact that the music is constant, but I still think it would be better if the music was just used as punctuation and not as a constant background audio layer.

... loud and interferes with dialogue. I need to have CC on the entire time. The music swells up, even when there is what should be a quiet moment between two characters...it's pretty much never ending in the show....music is in the background for almost every minute of every episode.

I haven’t noticed this on DSC, but it was a problem for me on Doctor Who, broadcast on BBC America. The music and special effects volume was just too high.

But since then I got a new TV and haven’t noticed the problem with the new TV. This makes me think these kinds of issues are related to settings itself.or something involving the TV, rather than the show.

Ironically I find the Berman era music and Discovery music fairly equal in terms of quality, though the 90s music style might be more memorable, I’m not sure.

Late Voyager and early Enterprise had this almost “sleepy” feel that was a slight change from how it was in the 90s. Then late Enterprise really started to change things and kicked up percussion.

There were still "quiet" breaks during Amok Time.

I just rewatched Amok Time a couple days ago. I haven’t seen it in a long time. It’s still a great episode. The music was actually perfect in that episode.
