I wonder if there will be any reference or symbolism with Jack and Daleks. Rose (BadWolf) was the main part but the Daleks killed him first

I doubt it. At this point, for Jack, his death at the hands of the Daleks was thousands of years in his past.

For me, it's habit, though I prefer it not necessarily being tied to Christmas itself.
