I can only speak for myself, but: Most of the series have catered to my preferences, it's just a matter of degree.
I mean, there is a certain level of appeal to things like Trek, like space and stuff like that. But, for me, being catered too is darn close to fan service. Now, as I have read here and elsewhere (not from you, but others) that fan service is totally OK, acceptable and even encouraged. Now, call me a selfish old man, but I don't find a story tailored specifically so that only a select few can really access it all that enjoyable all the time. Like chocolate ganache it is not something I want to eat every single meal.
For me, Star Trek was that series that expanded my understanding of characters, of aliens, of ideas. So, I really would love it when Star Trek goes in the direction that I would not go as a fan. And that's what Discovery and Picard did-went directions I would never have thought of, introduced characters for me to get to know and understand, and locations that feel very inviting and yet unfamiliar.
Ok, that got a bit ranty. I guess I see being catered to as something not to aspire to nor a requirement. I doubt that made much sense and apologies in advance for any offense. It's just been a long day.
