In my mind tying up a season arc neatly and moving onto something different is actually just as artificial as the older pattern of tying up an episode neatly and moving onto something different.

Ideally serialized shows should have long-form story arcs across their entirety. Or at minimum, long-form character arcs.

DS9 certainly did a good job of tying up some aspects of the Dominion War each of the later seasons, but didn't complete the arc until the end.

I don't think DSC should spend more than 2 seasons on The Burn™, but 2 seems OK.

I've watched every Star Trek series to conclusion except Voyager. So I guess that was the one time Star Trek wasn't for me.

But I don't think I've ever been blown away by Star Trek. I think Picard is okay, Discovery is more entertaining to watch than Picard but nothing special. DS9 may have been as big of a deal as it's gotten for me.

Bold prediction: Su’kal is the name of a new to Star Trek alien race that caused the burn and will become the main villain for the rest of season 3, and the entirety of season 4.

Or the name of leader of the alien race that caused the burn and will become the main villains for the rest of season 3, and the entirety of season 4. Is it coincidence that "Su'kal" rhymes well with "Dukat" ;);)

Culber has been amazing this season.

Agreed, I've seen videos of Wilson Cruz's conference appearances (like the one below) where he showcased his talents and fun sides. Then afterwards I thought how he was under-utilized in previous Disco seasons. No more, finally in S3 the show-runners figured out how to make the best use of Cruz's talents and now it pays off handsomely ;)

I can only speak for myself, but: Most of the series have catered to my preferences, it's just a matter of degree.
I mean, there is a certain level of appeal to things like Trek, like space and stuff like that. But, for me, being catered too is darn close to fan service. Now, as I have read here and elsewhere (not from you, but others) that fan service is totally OK, acceptable and even encouraged. Now, call me a selfish old man, but I don't find a story tailored specifically so that only a select few can really access it all that enjoyable all the time. Like chocolate ganache it is not something I want to eat every single meal.

For me, Star Trek was that series that expanded my understanding of characters, of aliens, of ideas. So, I really would love it when Star Trek goes in the direction that I would not go as a fan. And that's what Discovery and Picard did-went directions I would never have thought of, introduced characters for me to get to know and understand, and locations that feel very inviting and yet unfamiliar.

Ok, that got a bit ranty. I guess I see being catered to as something not to aspire to nor a requirement. I doubt that made much sense and apologies in advance for any offense. It's just been a long day.

Yes, and of the ENT episode where the whole crew turned into holos

Nice monster! Osyraa finally is more interesting... but the Burn was caused by a child's ...what - Inability to confront a holo monster?
