I didn't know there would be any anything after episode 10. So, I see we get two episodes without the Terran Empress, and hopefully with more Adira, though Burnham still seems to be hogging the limelight.

Episode 12 is another Johnathan Frakes directing job. No matter the story, those are always a little better for his prescence.

I'm not sure about that after Stardust City Rag (PIC). According to writer Kirsten Beyer, he was the architect of the notorious Icheb gouging scene!

You sure that wasn't the writers? IDK, it was gory, but it worked as motivation for Seven.

The previous S3 episode he directed wasn't so good

The negative reaction to that episode is a mystery to me.

Neither Osyraa or Book's Bro were interesting, they had a Millenium Falcon vs. Star Destroyer fight, and Georgiou was at her bitchiest level ever.

I still don't get the controversy over the Icheb scene.

Rest of the stuff with bejazzle kinda sucked though

Tonally speaking it was a mistake to have an episode which was a lighthearted "heist" similar to many DS9 stories framed by two brutal murders.

In that sense I suppose "tonally" isn't something that bothers me in a show.
I'm a pretty big fan of some fairly dark comedy and love both Bojack and R&M for doing exactly that kind of quick change high low emotion stuff

It was needlessly, over-the-top gory and brutal, that's the problem.

And I also suspect that part of the reason why Icheb was killed off so brutally was as a kind of underhanded insult to Manu Intiraymi. I mean, I can certainly understand why Manu wasn't asked to return, but I get the distinct impression that Icheb's death was this graphic because it was like "Ha ha ha, we don't like you, we're going to really stick it to the character you played, so there".

See that just doesn't bother me in a show where ships and their crew are blowing up all over the place and people get phasered left right and centre. It didn't stay with me any more than plenty of other violent Trek scenes

It was over-the-top but, if you don't see it, it's harder to buy Seven's motivation. Maybe they could've cut away to imply that's what happened. But if they're going to use the TV-MA rating, they might as well use the TV-MA rating. Otherwise, why rate it that?

"But the children!" There are no kids watching Picard. Most people watching it grew up with TNG when it was on.

Borg stuff should be gory. Even VOY had severed heads with exposed brains (and TNG had those as well)

And it's not like Trek always had an evolved sensibility. What about ensign Lynch where was it's evolved sensibility then

Exactly so. It was a framing device specifically to highlight the brutality and Seven's own pain. I don't see it out of step with the rest of the episode.

I think it would have worked better if Icheb was seen near the start of the episode, but his fate was unclear until the confrontation with Bejazzle. The way it was structured was slightly odd, because they showed us as the viewers and later Seven just told the other characters.
