Your attempt to define shows with overall story arcs interspersed with standalone episodes (like X-Files and Buffy), as “episodic, I have to conclude, is an attempt to broaden the definition of what you call “episodic,” in order to include good shows (and shows you like) as “episodic” thereby “proving” your point.
Sounds like someone is getting a bit paranoid.![]()
X-Files is episodic.
Sorry, but most of The X-Files is episodic. watching it now. Season 5 only has a couple episodes that even deal with the overlying story arc. Look it up on IMDb. You don't have to take my word for it.
The fact that you're currently watching The X-Files doesn't mean you have an accurate understanding or comprehension of what type of series it is... because you don't.
The original debate was that Discovery wasn't doing well because it was a linear story. I argue if they went episodic with overlying story arcs, it would do better. I posted examples of similar shows that were successful at that. X-Files is one of them.
There may be a kernel of truth to the story: perhaps CBS has considered selling older seasons to Netflix or are considering how to increase the visibility of the series. So what? The context of the article is highly suspicious. Moreover, low level entertainment reporting tends to approach stories more from the the perspective of fan concern rather than insider and professional industry awareness. The fact that Discovery season 1 isn't a huge ratings winner on CBS Thursdays isn't terribly remarkable. It isn't big name sports or reality TV, which dominate the Nielsen Ratings. It's also running against the current season of Discovery on the subsidiary streaming network. If I am watching season 3, why would I switch over from CBS All Access to CBS to watch season 1? Around the world, the series constantly appears in the Top 10 Netflix offerings, and in the Top 10 on Parrot Analytics in the US. Wanting to make more off something isn't a sign of weakness.Which is basically what I said earlier. If they sell new episodes of their Star Trek shows to netflix then they may as well shut down CBS AA instead of rebranding it. I doubt if there are any negotiations either, so the article is probably just made up to get clicks.
Except Discovery IS episodic with overlying arcs—particularly in this third season. If anything it’s maybe a bit too episodic for my taste![]()
Clearly it's doing fine since they keep doing it.The original debate was that Discovery wasn't doing well because it was a linear story.
Yeah, it I am surprised at how often it keeps failing yet keeps doing it.Clearly it's doing fine since they keep doing it.
You need to calm down, bro. You’re not going to last too long around these parts being this sensitive.Go back read my very first post in this thread.
It's funny how people try and tell people what they mean. You actually think you know what I mean more than I do? It's called being a troll.
I never once said the show you just mention were 100% episodic. So yes you are making false claims about me.
Quit being a troll.
X-Files is episodic. you are just being argumentative, because that's what you do.
Right now the whole reason for all these Trek series is to grow the CBS All Access brand. They wouldn't then send all their shows to a competitor. I saw the site link and immediately thought this was fake news.

Whatever you say trolly trollster.
Pretty much tells me what I need to know.Speaking of trolls, I noticed the twitter account of the source for this rumour was trolling the Star Trek CBS page (the ubiquitous and always unfunny response - "What was your favourite Georgiou scene" "When she left"). That same account also claims that Enterprise is an infinitely better looking and better produced series than the current ones.
Given that sort of behaviour alone, I wouldn't be putting much faith in anything it claims about modern Trek.
