Since Carl was reading tomorrow's newspaper, does that imply that Early Edition is part of the Star Trek universe?

This actually might have been one of my favorite episodes of the season, partly because I liked seeing how Georgiou has softened, and also because it was strangely comforting to be back in the Mirror Universe. As excited as I was to see what the 32nd century had in store, there's something disquieting about being thrust into such a distant and unfamiliar time period. I have been enjoying season three overall, but it's probably made me feel sort of like how the Discovery crew felt about being cut off from everything they knew.

There was also something reassuringly old school Star Trek about Carl, who was obviously reminiscent of Q, not to mention various other characters, god-like and otherwise, that the Enterprise crew would encounter who incongruously seemed like they could have been plucked out of Earth's past, whether it was Trelane or the Iotians or Abraham Lincoln, etc.

SMG and Yeoh turned out great performances. I agree with this part from trekmovie review:

Sonequa Martin-Green relishes every moment in her debut as Mirror Michael, making it super clear she is bad to the bone. Michelle Yeoh also impresses here as she appears to be almost pretending to be the Emperor, even though she actually is the Emperor. Michael Prime has changed her.

Michelle Yeoh doesn’t get enough credit as an actress...her martial arts skills often take center stage, but she’s really quite good.

I am a little confused here. If this is the past and Georgiou implied that it is then how come Stamets dies, instead of betraying Lorca as we know he did and die later at the hands of Lorca? So is that some kind of retconning or something?

"The City on the Edge of Forever" shows us two possible futures, that hinge on the death or survival of Edith Keeler. "Yesteryear" (TAS) shows us two possible futures, that hinge on the death or survival of Spock as a child.

Makes you wonder why they corrected the commbadge when he’s from the JJVerse anyway

But wasn't in from one universe and pretending to be from another?

In thinking back over the episode, did anyone else find that Wiseman was playing Captain Killy a bit too genially to be a legendary homicidal warrior of the Mirror Universe?

My favorite thing in the episode is Burnham not being able to deal with just how crazy the whole Carl thing is. Crazy stuff happens in Trek all the time, yeah, but it's still crazy.
It would be hard to deal with the sudden appearance of an alien entity that starts dropping puns left and right.

In case anyone cares, I watched Burnett's video on this episode, and I can safely say that his argument is "get off my lawn." He considers the use of the Guardian of Forever (and he makes only lazy efforts to connet them) a violation of the sanctity of the TOS and TAS stories, made only worse by its implementation by a series he does not consider to be Star Trek. Burnett also lies, saying that the Guardian was never used again out of respect for Ellison, when indeed, Roddenberry himself proposed a film story that used the Guardian that would have Kirk go back in time to deal with the assassination of JFK.

I've got to wonder what Gene Roddenberry had against JFK. He really wouldn't let go of that story. At all. And, from what I understand, the world goes all to Hell in that story, if JFK had lived.

Second time through, and I'm teetering on the brink of a nine, but will wait for the conclusion of this Terran tale...

Had a "now I have a headache" Austin Powers moment during the Kovich temporal explanation, but enjoyed Michelle Yeoh's nuanced and layered performance, especially the Saru/Georgiou dynamic in both worlds, the sword to neck moments for both Burnhams and SMG's performance as bloodthirsty Michael, the Shakespearean "peace and love to the universe" moment, and the Winston Churchill doorman scene, but the Adira/Stamets moment about Gary is turning a bit into a soap opera, as in, repetitive for no reason. And like, why go find Saru when you have a com badge?

Maybe this will be resolved in part two, but as bloodthirsty and vicious as mirror Burnham is, how could she truly be in love with a worker's rights centered Lorca?

And finally man, did Joann rain some punches down on her challenger--Ouch!
