    In 2370 a Klingon Defense Force patrol ship found a pair of strange vessels floating in deep space on the Fringes of the Empire in the wake of an Ion Storm near the Federation, bringing the to a local base for research. The boxy craft were unusual in many regards, none the least of which was the fact that they were adorned with (among other things) words in the Roman Alphabet and was apparently at least six centuries old. This was enough to prompt a request by the local admiral for Starfleet assistance in investigating the strange vehicle. But before arrival Klingon crews had opened the larger of the two craft's hull and had found thirty figures in heavy ornate armor in acceleration couches as passengers with another four manning stations. Not dead, but dormant. Eight hours latter they awoke and began carving a red streak through the Base's staff. In 24 hours they had killed more than 95% of it's 22,000 personnel before commandeering a docked Vor'cha class cruiser and flying off.

    Said ship would soon become infamous in both Klingon and Federation Space as the following months, decrying the former as being "Xenos" and the latter as "Heretics". They launched attacks against Klingon border colonies and minor space facilities, destroying targets they deemed of being of military significance and occasionally abducting human civilians. In space, they handled their craft with surprising skill and on the ground they were a nightmare. Maximum power phaser rifle shots did marginal damage to their suits while their rocket assisted projectile weapons could blast apart multiple starfleet security personnel or Klingon Warriors in one shot. After five months, a ground victory was won at Patel's World against what were called the ED (Extra Dimensional) Warriors. Some 3,200 Security Personnel and eight shuttles used for CAS were lost in the Battle of Patel's World, but seven ED Warriors were neutralized. These casualties were enough to get the remaining 27 to cut their losses and flee into unclaimed space and the hunt for them is still ongoing. But on the technical side a fair bit of salvage was obtained that day.

    The ED Warriors themselves were strange in many regards in that they were human. Humans which had been subject to extensive surgical modifications with genetically modified organs, but human none the less. For both legal and ethical reasons attempting to replicate that aspect of these beings out of time and space rejected Their was no such qualms about the armor. A powered exoskeleton covered in heavy multi-layer ceramic armor containing a full life support system, sensor package and comm suite. In many was it was an odd match up, with both the advanced composite materials and the comparative crudeness of the computational systems. It was a product of brute force engineering, but still potent in spite of that. Analysis of these mechanisms and the engineering projects which arose around them was organized under an initiative called Project Aquila after the twin headed avian insignia common on ED Warrior gear.

    After twelve years of work and numerous false starts, Project Aquila yielded fruit in the form of the Starfleet Mark-I Combat Exosuit. In many respects similar to those used by the ED Warriors it was based on with a few technical differences. Most notably is that it is intended for use by unmodified humanoids. Another point of difference is it's armament, in place of the projectile weaponry used by ED Warriors, starfleet opted for a Type-3.5 heavy phaser rifle designed to draw power from the suit's reactors. Computer systems are more advanced, but the hydraulics and synthetic musculature are estimated to be only about 75-80% as efficient as the ED Warrior. Using replicators to reproduce the advanced ceramics of the armor proved impractical, forcing the implementation of specialized machines. While more awkward than those employed by the ED Warriors, the Mark-I Combat Exosuit soon became popular among Starfleet Security forces.

    After awakening in a strange universe the 34 brothers of the Viridian Blades chapter of the Adeptus Astartes quickly moved to secure themselves from the Xenos that had attempted to scrutinize them as well as transportation and spaceborn weapons. They also secured another relic brought along by whatever event had thrown them beyond time and space, an Imperial Guard cargo carrier that had also been whisked away in the evacuation event that they had been involved in. Inside which, fifty two people existed in suspended animation of one sort or another, though their significance early on was limited to the services of the five tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechancius to keep their commandeered Vor'cha class ship operational and two Adepts of the Administratum keeping track of inventory. They probed about gaining intelligence on their surroundings as they worked out their long term plan. Then they gathered resources and personnel from the non-Imperial humans of the so-called "United Federation of Planets". After a miscalculation at the battle of Patel's World cost them more than a fifth of their number the Viridian Blades reckoned that they had enough captives and local human technology to facilitate their basic needs and pushed off with some 676 UFP humans in their ship's hold, flying off in search of a haven and making preparations.

    For Starfleet, the departure of the ED Warriors was considered a loose end. On the one hand a group of renegade exceedingly deadly warriors flying about in a stolen Klingon Battle-cruiser with kidnapped Federation citizens was big issue. On the other hand their numbers were small and space is a big place. A Klingon Warship could not remain active indefinitely without yard work, especially with a small crew not trained in it's operation. Either it would fail leaving it stranded in interstellar space or it would sooner or land somewhere. After loosing it's trail priority gradually fell, especially as other matters closer to home became more pressing. After a year of flight, the Viridian Blades found a suitable world and named it Nuclenium. For even cast away in another universe beyond the Light of the Astronomicon their loyalty held true and if they could not reach their Imperium, they would grow an new one.

    In 2398, a Klingon Scout vessel found the Vor'cha class cruiser orbiting an M-class planet and moved to investigate. It was destroyed on the outskirts of the system, but managed a long range transmission back to the Empire of their findings. Both Starfleet and the KDF readied expeditions. The KDF launched and arrived first, force of a battlecruiser, three escorting Warbirds and a fleet train of six troopships carrying 20,000 Warriors. Many of them were armed with twenty kilo heavy disruptor rifles* for ground operations against the planetside base that was detected. When they arrived, they faced stiffer resistance than they anticipated. A set of orbital platforms built into towed asteroids inflicted considerable damage to the fleet and while the troopships were able to deploy much of their forces to Nuclenium's surface they faced far more than just a couple dozen Astartes that they expected. Part of the reason why was because there was a race of herbivorous blue horned humanoids at an iron age level of technological development that could be exploited as an underclass. But more than that was that there was over a hundred and sixty two thousand humans.

    Part of the reason why the Viridian Blades captured humans was as a source of manpower for their planned projects and to help them operate machinery which might not have been sanctified by the Omnissiah, but was still of Human origin. They (as well as salvaged body parts taken from battlefields) provided tissue samples to the Magos Genetor for work in their grand plan. Systems were set up which resembled large bags of cultured organic tissues fed synthetic nutrients and monitored by cogitators which were hooked up to the brains of the 34 of the 37 Guardsmen which had been frozen in the shuttle. The first of these mechanisms were built en-route and were decanted a few months after arrival, providing 208 men and women that had been flash grown to adolescence (with another 32 failing to develop properly) and after six to eight months of therapy and training under the supervision of the three Commissars and two of the Astartes the fragments of memories that had been instilled into them clicked into place and they could function in this role (though another 22 of them ended up developing intense psychosis during said period and ended up converted into servitors). The system was based on the Vitae Womb employed by the Death Korps of Krieg. It was a method which was not wildly used for a variety of practical (failure rate, physical and mental health issues normally set in after a couple decades, gaps in knowledge base, mental inflexibility, technological intensity, risk of warp tainted templates corrupting batches, surplus of warm bodies on hive worlds, etc), religious and moral reasons. But in this situation where additional loyal humans were needed in bulk quickly and with Federation technology which streamlined some of the processes it was deemed to be necessary for the development of Nuclenium. They served as soldiers, spacers, guards, overseers of native laborers and federal humans and workers and more. Some received more technical, religious or administrative training and those that passed served performed adequately in that role. In addition to the decanting of adults, more conventional exowombs were set up to provide infants for the Imperial Guard as well as more natural means as the artificially produced adults were ordered to pair off.

    By 2398, Nuclenium had grown into what the official Starfleet report described as "a Dystopian hellhole", though one that was heavily defended. Teams of warriors were transported on the forested island chain where the Imperium-In-Exile had set up their main cluster of settlements with shuttles prepared to target ED Warriors. What they faced instead was the First Nuclenian Regiment of the Imperial Guard (pictured, a member of the 12th Company). Eight thousand men and Women**, both vat grown and naturally born armed with a variety of equipment from Lasguns to Hydra turrets to a squadron of six Leman Russ main battle tanks. Shuttles were shot down while the battle on the ground while combat on the ground became a nightmare. In spite of their heavy small arms, the KDF faced a well trained force with the home field advantage and superior arms and tactics. Heavy Disruptors were powerful, but unwieldly and purely line of sight. Mortar shells rained upon their formations, snipers picked off Klingon officers, Klingon Squad marched into kill zones to be chewed apart by heavy bolter positions and those unfortunate to come across tanks were cut down by the score. The main course of the ground battle lasted around six hours, though pockets of Klingon Forces did withdraw into the forests which would hold out for some time to come.

    The Battle in Space was less one sided, with a fair number of defensive stations destroyed and the Vor'cha class ship badly damaged even though the Klingons were forced to withdraw. The Starfleet expeditionary force arrived a week latter (with a complement of 500 Exosuit equipped MACOs and Security Forces) and was in a strong enough position to force even the Astartes to concede a tactical defeat and to try their hand at the negotiating table. In short, the terms laid out before them was as such...
    1. Cessation of all hostilities against the Federation and the Klingon Empire
    2. Repatriation of all Federation Citizens and the withdrawl of all Klingon Forces
    3. Relocation of all Imperial humans from Nuclenium to an uninhabited habitable world five light years away over a period of Five Years both by Starfleet Logistics and whatever transport craft they had.
    4. Demolition of all equipment on Nuclenium after the relocation.
    5. Accept a Starfleet Starship to act as an observer for the next 20 years and a UFP embassy.
    Begrudgingly the Ad-Hoc government of the Imperium-In-Exile agreed to the terms and the evacuation to what would be called Neo-Nuclenium was facilitated. The transition was a hard one and forced a considerable demobilization of military assets and that plans for population expansion be scaled back. Never the less, the Imperials did not abandon their dreams of conquest.

    If the armor is Starfleet, move the badge to the left; that's where all badges are, irrespective of dimension, age and place. Maybe also move away a little bit from the crude visor shape and more helmet-like; we've got transparant aluminum at our disposal, after all. Also: a popular choice of security colour when going away from standard ship-bound duties is green. Maybe that works a bit better here as well, because the red-on-grey screams HIT ME, which I think is a bad choice for a combat suit.

    I wonder why the Klingons didn't just glass the planet. Maybe they wanted some of that sweet dystopian tech for themselves, but still, I think this would be way too much of a hassle for them.

    Would Betazoids recognise Imperial Spykers? And seeing as the Chaos Lords exist if someone believes in them, would that now mean there's Chaos stuff going on in subspace as well? Freaky...

    you’re right it’s the wrong side but it does make sense if it’s functional. Better to hit it with the off hand than primary hand while holding a weapon. But, a suit like that should have completely internal comms and the badge should just be decoration.

    They like a challenge but liberal use of transporters (used against enemies, not just for movement) and infantry shields (on the armor too) would have made sense as would orbital fire. Klingons also have mini mortars for disrupting infantry.

    1. The Techpriests set up a shield around Nuclenium's primary settlement.
    2. The Klingons wanted to capture Astartes armor to develop their own.
    3. Bringing down a Space Marine face to face would get a Klingon Warrior many Honors. Similarly a general would earn many Honors by proxy if his army managed to kill all of them.
    4. The Klingons wanted to rescue the Federation Civilians because A: some Klingons thought it was the Honorable thing to do, B: It would improve Federation/Klingon relations and C: Nuking them would cause what political scientists would call "A Shit Show".
    Fortunately there is no link between the Trekverse and the Immaterium and any Daemon caught in the Trekverse would simply disintegrate.

    I think if it really came to it, the Imperium of Man could casually crush everything in the Alpha Quadrant while most of the Imperium didn't even realize it was happening. They've been waging war for tens of milleniums fighting stuff far scarier than anything Starfleet has ever imagined. Now, I'd rather live in Star Trek than 40K, but let's just be real here.

    This is (as recorded in the records of his homeworld) Lieutenant Davium Zwein, Primaris Marine of the Viridian blades' 6th Company. During an evacuation of a civilized world being both besieged by greenskins which prompted the awakening of tomb complexes in the aftermath of the Indominus Crusade a strange anomaly end up casting his Thunderhawk and an Imperial Guard dropship beyond the conflict zone stranded in the depths of interstellar space. Their only option was to enter suspended animation. When he awoke, it was to find strange Xenos pawing over him. His first act was to reach out and crush one of their ridged skulls in his fist, soon followed by the rest of his forces doing the same. After making their escape, they learned more about the strange new universe they had been cast into. They learned through questioning prisoners, Omophagean insights, going through enemy datafiles, direct observation and more. Notable among them was a being known as Q.

    Simply put, during the inital Campaign against the Federation and Klingons, Exodus and in the establishment of Nuclenium and Neo Nuclenium he would sometimes flash into appearance before Zwein, his more senior Marines and (after the colony's founding and assumption of the title of Provisional Chapter Master) ruling council. At first Q was met force, but as he would usually just let bolts and slashes pass through him this was eventually abandoned. Unlike the other beings of this realm, he had knowledge of "that dismal dimension set you call home" and would make references about it their conversations. He would jest incessantly, taking on the form of Guardsmen, Astartes, Commissars, Orks, someone crossdressing in Sororitas Armor, Aeldari, members of Starfleet, Klingon Warriors and more. On a couple of occasion he'd whisk away Zwein and a couple to some strange place for a brief spell to make some point in service on whatever task he'd been given. But for all of that the strange entity of this realm never actually harmed his men and on occasion gave useful information.

    As such, the normally stoic Superhuman eventually learned how to deal with the being. Violence did not work, nor did pretending the entity did not exist. Instead he'd observe and give some of what he would want. When he'd show up he acknowledge his presence and would do his best to follow whatever line of thought the being was working through. He'd let his displeasure show, respond and usually give some dry retorts. For as aggravating as these encounters could be, useful information could still be gained through them if one parsed matters out afterwards. An unorthodox approach that Inquisitor Narhu had concerns about, but never the less was one that he felt would be an asset as the the Imperium-In-Exile grows and prepares for the coming Reclamational Crusade.

    As Neo-Nuclenium continued it's artificially accelerated it's rise, the Imperium-In-Exile dispatched expeditions to nearby Star Systems to investigate them. Members of the Imperial Guard often provided security for Explorators as well as general assistance, clumsy as it might be. Even so, they often found themselves being observed by Starfleet. Mostly in space, but often on the ground. The fact that away teams of a dozen Starfleet personnel would on occasion visit Imperial operations was a fact that would not be overlooked. Among those which did the most interaction with said individuals would be Commissars.

    Among other educational institutions, a makeshift Schola Progenium was established by the Imperium-in-Exile to mold children (both natural or tank born) into it's future leaders. A Commissariat was part of this, though their function had changed somewhat. Maintenance of discipline, order and oversight of military affairs remained at the core of it, but a secondary function was external relations. Whatever their end goals might be, the rulers of the Imperium-In-Exile had long since realized that they were outclassed by many powers which could snuff out their nascent Empire with overwhelming numbers if nothing else. Interaction with foreign powers in a manner other than conquest or extermination was required and the burden of diplomacy was one in which Commissars were charged. A number Starfleet officers soon became familiar with stern men and women in peaked Caps, Greatcoats and Ceremite Breastplates treating them with suspicion while conveying a fair deal of disdain for what they saw as a weak, decadent and malignantly soft society in need of the Emperor's Light. Even violence was largely avoided, save for one instance in which a flash grown guardsman tried something which ended in his Summery Execution.

    Let me get this straight: phaser rifles, capable of vaporizing a person-sized target on a high enough setting, is incapable of penetrating their armor, even on their highest setting? The Imperium may well deal with threats that Starfleet has never had to contend with (even though the latter most certainly has had it's fair share of world-ending threats, such as the Planet Killer and V'ger), but can Marine Armor survive Necron Gauss weaponry (which is the closest equivalent to Star Trek weaponry capable of disruption on a molecular level)?

    I think that Starfleet might actually push the Marine armor further, and rather than just reverse-engineering it, turn them into a sort of personal tank, similar to the suits used in The Edge of Tomorrow, but more heavily armored.

    I think it's safe to say that upon finding their infantry outclassed by those hardsuits, Starfleet would stick to using attack shuttles and fighter/bombers, whose shields would give them some survivability, only using infantry when airstrikes could result in the death or injury of the hostages they were trying to rescue.

    The Klingons are a different story.

    Yep. After all phaser strikes which Jump Cut people into oblivion fail to do any damage to common and frankly not all that durable non organic materials. How many phaser fights have happened in the corridors of DS9, the Enterprise and Voyager with missed shots failing to so much as ding the corridors while regular dynamite blew up a fair bit of the same.

    What makes you think that they were ever on a vaporize setting? Come to think of it, the only time that we see a phaser used on a high setting was in TUC, when Valeris used a hand phaser to vaporize a pot (which promptly set off an alarm). What do you think would happen to an officer if they used a phaser set on 'vaporize', and missed his or her mark? Besides possibly decompressing the section he or she was in? At the very least, that would not look good on one's record...

    Even in the 23rd Century, a hand phaser could be used to heat up a rock to the point that it could be used as a makeshift heater, when an away team was stranded. I think that even a hand phaser on it's maximum setting could turn a Marine armor into a modern version of the Brazen Bull, albeit it would drain the power cell significantly, and would likely take a sustained beam before the armor would start to turn into molten slag.

    And there is no doubt that same marine would be attempting to turn offending officer into wet hamburger. Personal force fields might help, but their usage in canon is unfortunately scarce, and Bolt guns appear to be designed to pierce armor.

    Nice art work, but the body / head proportion seem a little "off" to me. {shrug} Maybe it's a weird viewing angle throwing off the perspective. Still, nice art work. Much, much better than I could ever do.

    Something to think about: I know that Steve Cole of Amarillo Design Bureau, the company that produces Star Fleet Battles (based on ST:TOS), is always on the lookout for good artist who can create filler clip-art for when he has a bit of blank space at the bottom of a page. I'd say your work is as good as any he's used in the past.

    There are plenty of instances in which a phaser Jump Cuts someone away with one shot and fails to noticeably affect local scenery. There's a scene in Civil Defense that shows this, off the top of my head.

    I didn't even notice that, even when I watched it. Huh.

    Well, at least a disrupter, not that I don't have any idea how that is possible, since it would still take a lot of energy to completely vaporize a person. Then again, maybe only very special materials are resistant to vaporization, combined with how much easier it is to vaporize organic matter in comparison to minerals. More likely, they didn't show any parts of the interior getting red hot due to how work intensive and expensive the special effects would have been.

    I think that as a compromise, I'd say that a direct full-power phaser hit would definitely turn the armor red-hot, unless we're talking about an ablative armor. Rifles would be the most effective, but again, it would probably take an entire power cell to reduce a Marine armor to melted molten scrap.

    Regardless of what they call it Star Trek phasers don't vaporize their targets. If they did, you'd have superheated gas searing everyone with a dozen meters deader than disco. There are a fair number of entities and beings that have survvied phaser hits.

    Seriously, tho, the hand-phaser was a Magic Weapon invented for the times, in the 1960s when blood & gore were not welcome on TV. Even Gunsmoke and The Lone Ranger dialed back on shooting Bad Guys dead. Heck, watch the first season or two of Batman -- they covered up punches & kicks with *POW* and *WHAM* graphics.

    I will grant that vaporization as depicted in Star Trek up to DS9 isn't possible, probably according to the laws of thermodynamics. But then again, I'm pretty sure the Chaos Gods of 40K break known laws of physics. From time to time. Too bad, that doesn't make them any less canon, and that somehow, with Federation tech, it is possible to make people and objects not only disappear, but also to heat up solid rocks until they are glowing red.

    Unless you're going with a head canon, and throwing out the things that just doesn't make sense, which I've considered doing many times myself. It goes without saying that a lot of Federation technology violates many of the known laws of physics. Barring a completely new understanding of matter and energy, we will never have things like replicators or transporters. Rearranging matter on a molecular level is just not theoretically possible.
