Assignment: Eternity and mind melds

Bryan Levy

If there’s one thing I hate in TrekLit, it’s mind meld scenes. They try too hard and our overly mystical and are all basically the same, downward spirals into madness. I have to give @Greg Cox a lot of credit, because his mind meld between Spock and Roberta was not stupid, was not boring, and was a heck of a lot of fun.

You're right.

I will also note that Roberta's "Here? Right now?" sounds suspiciously like Inga's reply when Dr. Frederick Frankenstein orders her to "Elevate me!"

I seem to recall the melds in The Brave and the Bold and Desperate Hours as being pretty good and not like the OP describes. The meld with the Horta and Spock in Devil’s Bargain was well worth reading.

Haven’t read those yet, but on the list!

Brave and the Bold books one and two ordered! Question for @KRAD, how much influence did the fact that they were team up books have to do with the choice of title?

Oh my god, I never got the reference until right now.

I was under the impression this was about the DC team-up comic The Brave and the Bold?

Lol. By my count there are two references in this thread, the Young Frankenstein bit and The Brave and the Bold.
If there are more, and they start piling up, then maybe we need something analogous to the "body count" title cards in the so-bad-it's-almost-good slasher spoof, Student Bodies.

(That's unusual: I'm making allusions to a movie I actually saw [on a neighbor's "ON TV"]. Usually, I make allusions to movies I haven't actually seen, e.g., Fight Club or The Fly.)

At any rate, I wasn't aware of The Brave and the Bold's title being an allusion to anything else with the same title, and I don't think I caught the possible Young Frankenstein allusion in Ms. Lincoln's "Here? Right now?" utterance until I re-read the chapter. Maybe Assignment: Eternity is like Airplane! -- it's so loaded with allusions that it's impossible to catch all of them in the same sitting.

Well, for those who need to know, The Brave and the Bold was a Bob Haney written Batman team up book starting in the mid-60’s and running through the 80’s. It was also where the Justice League premiered. But, I couldn’t help but notice the team ups between crews, a la the original BATB.
