Even though this was a rote, paint-by-the-numbers adventure devoid of any true consequences aside from the sacrificial lamb who lost his head to underscore the "we're so evil" plot line, there were enough Trekian character developments and humorous moments to make this episode work to me, although the third time might not have been the charm with "wrong way" Linus during the schmalzy scene.
I enjoyed the crew reactions to the upgrades to Discovery--hell yeah we do!--, and the Shatneresque Georgiou scenery chewing and quips (I love me!) along with unconscious Terran (seemingly) flashbacks of course timed at just the right plot moments, among others. That ready room has really been decked out as well, wonder if there are any Easter eggs on those shelves.
Character dynamics were really nice in this episode as well, whether it be Stamets/Adira (life and death), Georgiou/Burnham (to trust or not to trust), or Tilly/Grudge (did you eat her?).
Not sure I'm all the way behind hero Burnham given what I see as one of the strongest ensemble casts in Star Trek history, but let's see how the Reunification goes... And can we have that Andorian join the crew after Culber regenerates those antennae?
Right now, I'd say a strong 7 weak 8, the former because of the tired, mustache twirling planetary plot, and the latter given the nicely executed character exploration...
