Looks like they upgraded the consoles.

I was right. The ship will look the same (because -- real-life production concerns -- why replace all those sets?), but underneath it will have been completely updated.

If the spore drive depends on the way the ship is design it make more sense they don't change it. Besides new tech is more advance and compact.

This would have been a nice surprise if the f**king mobile game didn't spoil Discovery is getting programmable matter upgrades. They did a shit job removing Season 3 spoilers. The twist in tomorrow's episode is already spoiled too.

What's the twist?

I think the outside might look different as well. Given all the exterior footage of Discovery in the season trailers is pre Die trying, we might be in for a surprise.

It's already been hinted at in the released episode clip. Section 31 is still around in the 32nd Century, and their mission is to eliminate the Emerald Chain Syndicate.

Personally I didn't get that from the trailer or the sneak peek. The Emerald Chain are clearly beefing with Starfleet but I didn't get any 31 hints. Sure Georgiou is tagging along but i think that's because of her skill sets and how dangerous the mission is. Unless there is another clip apart from the one with Saru getting briefed by Vance?

The 31st century with all its holograms sounds like Pikes idea of hell.

Pike is a bit of a relic.
Good guy and SF captain overall, but a bit of a relic in his thinking.

Anyway, in regards, to the upgrades... as its apparently evident from those photos, Disco is getting upgraded with programmable matter.
Old style Shield generator, weapon systems, and power transfer conduits will likely be harvested for raw material and converted into 32nd century type analogues (so, most of the changes will likely be internal).
We might get minor changes to the interior as well overall, but nothing overtly fancy.

The hull might also get an upgrade... and it wouldn't be that difficult even... repeat the same process and just harvest existing hull materials and convert them directly into 32nd century style ones.
You might even end up with an excess of energy and raw materials since futuristic materials would by default take less energy/resources to produce compared to old ones due to technical efficiency (and 930 years is an excessively long amount of time).

Disco could end up giving Starfleet enough leftover raw matter from the upgrade to create 10 (or much much more - maybe even 100) new ships (all equipped with spore drives for example - that way you don't need to touch the ones inside Federation HQ sustaining the distortion field).

Will it be recognizable?
Of course. The hull will probably get a color change too as a result (probably to resemble the USS Nog or something).
Will it get curvier lines? Who knows. Possible, but I don't think they will want to mess too much with the base mesh model they have.

Any mods/refits will be things like software, computer hardware, console interfaces and such. Weapons and shield emitters. The look of the ship won't change.

A solid door for the shuttlebay would be nice.

An observation lounge or two on the hull itself would be awesome.

Advanced replicators which dress the crew in the blink of an eye.

I have a feeling they'll probably add a programmable matter door to the shuttlebay. I can imagine Starfleet looking at the Discovery's shuttlebay door staying open and they just shake their heads in disbelief. Probably will order them to keep it closed for now on.

Refit-crew:.....And next on the list is fixing that always-open-shuttlebay-door of yours.

Saru:....... That's not normal???

They have ships made out of holograms. why would they care?
