The relationship was impactful and gentle at once. Sci-fi writers rarely create romances that I care about, but star-crossed Adira/Gray tugged at my heartstrings, like the strings of a cello.
It felt powerful because we realized Gray’s doom would be impending (for Adira to have received the symbiont). But this foreknowledge wasn’t predictability that'd undermine the plot; it only intensified the emotions, as we held our breath and foreboded anxiously when and how Gray’s inevitable death would come.

Adira has successfully avoided being the annoying/histrionic teen character. She’s likable and warm, with incredible depth, even with just one episode dedicated to her so far (and sadly likely the only Adira-centric episode we'll get this year, given how short a season is nowadays).

My favourite moments are the re-emergence of the hosts, and the naming of the host roster that ended with "Adira Tal". The satisfying newly gained self-assurance made me root for her. I'm glad that Gray’s probably coming back (now that he’s haunting Adira à la Ghost), and I hope to see more of the other hosts as well.

A cute moment is when Georgiou succumbed to Linus’s movie popcorns: "Yeah, ok!".

Wow. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. That was easily the best episode of Discovery yet. Hands down. Possibly ties with Calypso as the best-written thing in all of Kurtzman Trek.

While Discovery has been trying for unearned emotional beats since the middle of season 2, when Michelle Paradise came on, for the first time all the emotional beats rang true.

I really, really appreciated the A plot was told from the perspective of Adira, and that Michael was basically reduced to a supporting character in this episode. It was a tiny bit hokey Culber found some excuse to pawn off the away mission on her, but I understand why this was done in terms of "needs of casting." And Blu del Barrio is absolutely fantastic as Adira. I was really, really not expecting to find a sweet, tragic love story which legitimately made me a bit weepy. But there it was.

The B plot on the ship - while clearly a B plot, was also fairly gripping. In some ways it was a subversion of say TNG, in that the whole bridge crew got together for a meal, and instead of it being congenial, things fell apart. But it wasn't dark and cynical - it was just raw, touching on the frayed nerves of the entire crew. And the positive note of the ending with all of the crew moving toward emotional healing just felt right.

The only thing I'm not entirely sure on is the re-introduction of Zora. I'll have to wait and see. But I'm very happy they didn't go with the fanwank of having Adira's symbiont be Dax.

The parts on Thrill were great. I like the idea this season of Discovery visiting famous worlds of the Federation and seeing what they've become 1000 years later. We've seen Earth and now Thrill. I hope we see Vucan, Bajor and others.

I am very intrigued by the teaser for next week. I am a bit concerned that they are going to make Federation HQ a bunch of antagonists to Discovery. I hope we don't see a Federation that has lost its way and Discovery (aka Michael) has to remind them of Federation values.

Personally, I think it the episode might have worked better if the doctor had accompanied Adira to Thrill instead of Michael. It would have given Culber more to do in the episode. Plus, it would have avoided having Michael be a pivotal character that saves the day again. Why not give the spotlight to another character?

The B plot with the crew was a bit sappy in places but I really liked the scene at the end with the crew watching the old Buster Keaton film.

I do find it interesting that the sphere data apparently took over the ship's computer. I like Saru's idea that the sphere data is now protecting them. I hope we get more development in that plot.

While I concur, as I said, Michael really was just a supporting character this week as it was. SMG is the lead, and if she wasn't down on Trill, they couldn't just have her be one of the random bridge officers sitting down for the meal in Saru's quarters.

Why not? Patrick Stewart was the lead in TNG but there were episodes centered on other characters. Avery Brooks was the lead in DS9 but there were episodes centered on the other characters.

This episode wasn't really centered on Michael at all though. She had one 60-second action sequence, and said a few self-evident things to Adira. That's about it.

No, I think she did more than that. She went into the pool of symbiotes and was instrumental in pushing Adira to confront her symbiote's memories. And if Michael had not gone into the pool, Adira would have drowned. Michael saved Adira's life and was instrumental in Adira becoming a true blended Thrill.

No reference to Riker carrying a host around in TNG. I don't know if this is just further delegitimizing that episode, or a sign of the unreliability of information in the 32nd century, or we just have to chalk it up to Riker ("William Odan?") being a temporary, emergency host and not a long-term one like Adira was.
If they have lost their connection and their ability to join because of The Burn, then they've probably also lost much of the memories of their history.
They may not know about Riker being joined, thus it doesn't "delegitimize" it, it simply means they don't have that information.

Why do folks assume the worst all the time?

"The Burn decimated our population, particularly those capable of joining. We no longer have enough viable hosts."

They established in Equilibrium that "virtually half" of the Trill population was capable of joining. The casualties from the Burn must be much more significant than previously stated. Way more than the "Millions" figure from Burnham.
I think Michael was specifically referencing the number of Starfleet personnel that were killed since that was the gist of what Detmer was asking.

So are they implying any species can join with a symbiote as long as there is trust? That seems a bit silly.
Next weeks episode looks good. The guy from the Mummy is the boss. That should be fun
I think the word you are looking for is 'Acceptance' between the symbiote and Host, with a smidge of Trust thrown in as well.

That was a big part of when Riker did it, he and the Symbiote both had to be willing.

Agreed. It's nice to see another Trill symbiont that also has deep history of service and knowledge of the Federation, which is also related to the enthusiasm the Trill has for the Federation and their desire to rejoin it should the opportunity presents itself.

I do look forward for the evolution of the ship's creature to become Zora. I'm curious whether it would eventually be a Rommie-like AI character (another parallel b/w Disco's S3 with "Andromeda'') or whether Zora will have other abilities and characteristics that would be distinct that she won't be branded Rommie 2.0 ;).

Well Michael has to something heroic in each episode. It just wouldn’t be Discovery without it. :)
Funny that, you'd think she thought she was the STAR of the show or something.
:techman:

Buster Keaton? That stuff isn’t even that funny now, never mind a thousand years from now. :)

It is for most folks who haven't seen it before.
Also, the circumstances of a gathering make it seem funnier and thus more enjoyable.
People in large groups tend to laugh together rather than one person alone.

Some preliminary thoughts before I delve into the comments:
  • Great acting, top to bottom.
  • I'm still not happy with making Adira a teenager, but it seems like that is a characteristic that will wear off, perhaps. The scenes early in the episode seem to work hard to infantillze Adira, when it seemed like the actor would have been better playing as an adult.
  • Del Barrio was generally quite good throughout the episode, especially during the "Trill" sequence (although Ian Alexander stole his scenes).
  • An origin story for Calypso? I guess I should have expected it at some point, but it was nice
  • I think Detmer's trauma should have been approached with more subtlety.
  • The music was LOUD!
  • Culber's failed haiku was a gas! I am so going to remember that line.
  • SMG was pretty good in the support role. It was nice to see more subtle physical acting from her.
  • No Dax? Come in, it was gimme for fan service!
  • When does Linus finally get it on with the Empress?
