I always thought the bit in ST'09 where they're naming Jim is a reference to that movie, which was cancelled in favour of the reboot. George Kirk's father was presumably Tiberius Chase.
While unmade movies are fascinating, the script for Star Trek: The Beginning wasn't great. Some stuff doesn't make sense, like the Romulans sending a whole fleet of ships to Earth and it going undetected because they're travelling toward Earth in the shadow of the moon. But it was only a first draft, and presumably would have been thorough many changes before ever reaching the screen.
While there are some aspect I would keep from the script, namely:
Penelope Gardner, Archer & crew on shore leave – preferably Wrigley pleasure planet to create a TOS link, the United Earth Stellar Navy, Lt Jaxx, Maori ensign Ogg, Vulcan engineer Skal, Vulcan Ambassador Skon (Spock's grandfather), Terra Prime affiliated family
There are a number of things I would scrap and change in the script:
Tiberius Chase is not a relative of Kirk. Instead he is Captain Stiles’ first officer on the starship Spartan, and is the hero (read: antihero) that Kirk’s middle name is based on. Penelope Gardner (on and off girlfriend) serves with him, as does Shran (clearly using a different alias). Rather than aspiring to join Starfleet, he resigned from Starfleet after being kicked off of Enterprise around the time of the completion of the NX-refit after the Terra Prime incident and denied serving on Columbia or the other NX ships (association with Terran isolationism is being actively rooted out in Starfleet), explaining his service in UESN, where he meets Captain Stiles.
S.S. Spartan crew
Captain: Stiles
Commander/Helmsman: Tiberius Chase
Tactical Officer: Lt. Jaxx (Tellarite)
Security Officer: Shran
Chief Engineer: Skal
Comms officer: Penelope Gardner (the role would have to be expanded beyond translations, like electronic warfare and various hacker skills)
Science officer: Ensign Ogg
There’s no warp 8 ship (ahead of the times, don’t you think?). Its the warp 7 prototype ship (codenamed Omega) that becomes known as the Daedalus class, and they steal it, much like how Kirk stole the Enterprise.
The Coalition of Planets has long fallen apart by the time of the Romulan attack on Earth.
The Romulans reverse engineered subspace vortex tech from the Xindi, which is why Earth did not detect them coming. And make clear there is a distinction between the BoPs featured in ENT, and the BoPs with the signature bird on their hulls.
And they aren’t bringing the war to the Romulans doorsteps for the first time, having had a few battles in the Bassen Rift before. But the mission that they are on changes the course of the war, due to the usage atomic weaponry the Spartan is carrying by default.
I’d also try and weave the story of the Stiles family into the film, and Chase abandoning his Terran isolationist views over the course of the film.
