The whole world was wearing masks last summer.
Not quite. The Canadian province where I live, masks didn't become mandatory until the start of August, and I know of another province where they weren't mandatory until last week. And IIRC, there are still some US states where they aren't mandatory.

I miss movie theaters because it was fun to see new releases on a much larger screen than I can fit in my house. Other than that, I have plenty to do.

If this does all pass, there will be a lot of empty cinema, bar, coffee shop, night club and restaurant premises. A lot of them will open up again, many with new businesses in them. Others will be redeveloped into something else there is a demand for.

It's the way of things. They're only businesses.

Tell that to every small business owner who lost their livelihood to this. It's more than "only businesses" to them. It was their primary source of income. We've lost a lot of really great family owned places since the summer here in New York.

Absolutely. It's a tragedy for the proprietors and for loyal customers.

However, they're not for the most part, lives. Yes it will ruin and cost some and that's hugely regrettable, but when all is said and done they're businesses. They're replaceable. Capitalism means you take the risks and reap the rewards. Or losses.

There will be a lot of businesses start up again as Covid Casualty (2022) ltd. That's how it works. That's how it should work.

If there's demand, empty cinemas will be rented and opened. Restaurants will open or reopen, niches will be filled, demand will be met.

Keeping people alive to be customers again is the main thing.

Every American needs to be forcefully told that this isn’t above freedom, it’s about public health. We need enforcement. Where’s Karidian?

China currently has three box office successes so far this year, "Jiang Ziya", "My People, My Homeland", and "The Eight Hundred". The latter is currently the highest grossing movie of the year worldwide, at $464 million. But "My People, My Homeland" might surpass it, considering it's been only released this month and already has a box office of $446 million.
Meanwhile, over in Japan, the new "Demon Slayer" movie managed to take in $44 million on its first weekend, which is a new record for Japanese box office. And that was with theaters at half capacity.

Movie theatres in the U.S. might be struggling and have an uncertain future, but internationally, movie theatres are doing fine even during CoVID.

In his newest episode of his weekly YouTube show "Charts with Dan", my favorite YT film journalist Dan Murrell talks about the development of Box Office this year as compared to last year, as well as month for month. He also discusses what it would mean if AMC would file for bancruptcy, and the differences between Chapter 7 and Chapter 11:

I realize how selfish I am when I say that I desperately miss going to the theater to see movies. I miss getting to get out of the house and sitting in the dark with a bag of popcorn and just escaping for a couple of hours.

Before the shutdown, I had already stopped going as often, mostly because my son (who I usually would go with) was working a lot of hours and spending his free time playing soccer. My wife is not a big fan of going to the movies as a general rule. She has an issue with sitting still for too long, so most of the time when we watch a movie at home, she's up and about, doing chores, playing with the dog, etc.

I just miss it. Watching at home has too many distractions. And I really miss the popcorn (though I've lost almost 30 lbs since the shutdown started, so yay!). Making it at home just isn't the same. Plus, my wife is allergic to corn so having it in the house is problematic. lol

So, question, sort of sliding of topic, but, What are the movie theatres showing in your area? With them not getting much new stuff, what old stuff are they showing?
If I was a movie theatre operator, I'd probably keep it closed during the day on weekdays and have a 7:00 and 9:00 showings at night. and on weekends and maybe Fridays do some kind of movie event/marathon. Like show all the Indiana Jones movies on a Saturday, Back to the Future, Star Trek Marathon for the whole weekend, Make it events where you get people who didn't get to see them in theatres. Charge $5.00 go for more people vs per person cost. They'll make it up in popcorn/concessions.

It seems to be about half and half new and old where I am. At the moment it seems that out of 15 movies currently playing, the old movies playing are Hotel Transylvania, Monsters Inc, Nightmare Before Christmas, Attack the Block, Goosebumps, Annabelle, The Conjuring and the original Scream, while everything else I think is newer, ie The Empty Man, Tenet, Unhinged, Honest Thief, Spongebob: Sponge on the Run, The War with Grandpa, The New Mutants, 100% Wolf.

What are the movie theatres showing in your area?

My area is not considered a hotspot in our province, so the theatres here are still open. I just checked for you, and here are the films showing today at the theatre closest to me:
  • 100% Wolf (2020)
  • 2 Hearts (2020)
  • Annabelle (2014)
  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)
  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • The Empty Man (2020)
  • Goosebumps (2015)
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Honest Thief (2020)
  • Hotel Transylvania (2012)
  • Monsters, Inc. (2001)
  • The New Mutants (2020)
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  • Possessor Uncut (2020)
  • Tenet (2020)
  • The War With Grandpa (2020)
(Note that there are not 16 screens: some of these only have one showing per day.)

There are two particular theatres I tend to go to. One is currently showing:
Goosebumps
Tenet
Honest Thief
My People, My Homeland
Percy
Scream
The War With Grandpa

The other theatre is showing:
Honest Thief
2 Hearts
Goosebumps
Tenet
The Conjuring
The Empty Man
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Unhinged
100% Wolf
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The New Mutants
The War With Grandpa

Same here. It's too bad it's getting more and more expensive to go and see any in theaters. I end up waiting until they come out on DVD so I can watch them.

The issue is that we don't know at this point what's a temporary issue and what's the "new normal". For instance, given that Zoom schooling doesn't work with young kids, in-person education will likely resume in time. But other things... will as many people go to plays or football games? Will churches have choirs again? Will movie theaters be regularly patronized? Will drive-in movies (theatrical social distancing, perfected decades ago) make a comeback? Will Santa be in a snow globe next Christmas? We just don't know what kind of social momentum or the "foot in the door" phenomenon will make permanent.

I love going to my local Imax & regal but, this wasn't encouraging to them.

Thats good that they got some money, since its the governments fault for them being closed down.
Pay some rent at places so they don't close.

Was going to go see WW84 in theatre, but was at a friends house for Christmas ( just a few people) and he had HBO Max and we watched it. Was good, but would have rathered the cinema. but wasn't good enough to see again in the theatre. Maybe next movie.

I'm going to look, but what is the box office releases coming? anything good??
