I remember that story! The CEO didn't think much of the fish burger idea, if I remember right. So finally, they had it and the pineapple sandwich go head to head at a franchise in a heavily Catholic neighborhood, one Friday. Final score: Filet o' Fish 350, Pineapple sandwich 8. The CEO changed his tune, and the rest is history.
I do love grilled pineapple, though.

Like all things, it depends upon the specifics.
Some of the best pizzas I've had have had pineapple on them. That was because of the specific crust, sauce, and cheese, with the specific sausage, the pepperoni, their cuts, the selection and cut of pineapple, the overall arrangement, etc.
Inartistically and tastelessly made pizzas with pineapple from other restaurants have also blown.
Because of the former, I vote Yay! (To vote otherwise would be to akin to denying that it's possible for e.g. a pepperoni pizza to totally suck.)

I think once in a while Hardee's/Carls Jr. in the US does a "Hawaiian" burger that has grilled pineapple, ham and teriyaki sauce on the beef patty. It wouldn't be my first choice, but I've never met one of their burgers I didn't like.I remember the first time I had a burger with an egg on it.
