Not all the dilithium exploded, since they're trying to buy some, just a majority of it it seems.
Also, it looks like whatever process they use to 're-crystalize' dilithium (discovered by Scotty is STIVTVH and it was mentioned multiple times in TNG that they 're-crystalize dilithium while it's still in the articulation frame'), no longer works; OR maybe when you perform the process repeatedly enough times, THAT'S what causes "The Burn" effect; so no, once a crystal is 'spent/used up'; the only option is to toss it and find new ones.

I imagine that the spore drive will allow the Discovery to visit different Federation worlds and help them rebuild. But I am concerned that the entire season might end on a big reset button. After all, if Discovery figures out what caused the Burn and they return to their own time in the past, they can prevent the Burn from ever happening which would make that future never happen. I would prefer Discovery never return to their own time and this future stay fixed but with a new and better Federation.
The thought crossed my mind, too, and I wouldn't like it either. It's possible, however - ok, more of a crackpot theory - that The Burn has something to do with BURNham (some inadvertent long-time butterfly effect of something), so she might feel obligated to undo it.

She was told - "There's some true believers left; but 'The Federation' no longer exists as a unified body. In here mind (and in her century) The Federation was always seen as a 'force for good'. She still believes IN the principles of 'The Federation' and if she's told there are still like minded 'true believers' -- why wouldn't she want to rejoin/rebuild 'The Federation'?

And no matter what star governments exist; she would see bringing them all together under a new Federation as a good thing.
I didn't say she wouldn't; I said it would make more sense to first get the lay of the land, er, galaxy, and contact some other "true believers" besides that guy who was waiting for 40 years, thn see what the others think/ plan (plus try and find her crewmates), then go from there. That's what seems logical for a trained officer to do; it's also what I would do if I was confronted with a similar situation.

ETA: She doesn't even know what exactly the other "believers" believe in. Their concept of the Fed. might have changed - for better, or worse, or just be different. So they would have to find common ground before they make plans.

I’m taking the leaked episode names with a grain of salt for the moment. Could be right.....could be flawed.

Book asked Burnham if she still had a recrystalizer in the episode. So it sounds they still exist and are used.

I thought this was pretty good...in fact better than I expected. I liked who the entire episode took place off the Discovery and off the sound stages. This series definitely needs that kind if breathing room from time-to-time.

Random Thoughts - What I Liked
1. Visually this was SPECTACULAR, and I am a videophile so that is actually very important to me. The visual FX, cinematography, locations, etc were amazing...honestly as good if not better than the Kelvin films.
2. This was an honest-to-goodness fun Star Trek adventure story. It wasn’t overly complicated, it didn’t rely on technobabble, it didn’t set up a mystery box...it just told a straight-up sci/fi adventure drama story.
3. I like the idea of The Burn and it’s impact on the galaxy. That’s a nice catalyst for upheaval and change, and it’s not overly complicated or far-fetched. It also helps avoid 97 pages of people bickering about how the Federation would never turn into a dystopian place in Gene’s Vision and all that stuff.
4. There was some genuine fun and humor here. It hit the mark nicely without being silly or wink-winky. It worked in the context of the characters and the setting without feeling forced.
5. I like the setting and potential here FAR more than I thought I would. There’s an opportunity here for the kind of frontier storytelling that I loved about TOS and DS9 that has been missing from most of the other spinoff series since 1969.
6. I like Book a lot more than I thought I would.

Random Thoughts - Things That Could Have Been Better
1. The action scenes on the show are still too frenetic for me. It seems like they are beautifully shot and choreographed, but they just happen so fast and frenzied but I can’t follow most of what is happening. Probably it’s just because I’m an old man now
2. I thought they overdid it just a little bit with regard to Burnhams emotions surrounding the whole situation.
3. Although I appreciate why it was done this way, I definitely missed seeing the Discovery and the rest of the crew in this premier.
4. I do agree with the idea that the trading outpost was pretty generic sci-fi stuff, and even harkens back to what we see in “Will You Take My Hand” DSC S1 and in PIC “Stardust City Rag”.
5. I had a little trouble following what the guys deal at the end of the episode is. I guess I need to rewatch and get a little bit more context there.

overall, I really enjoyed the episode perhaps more than I even expected to. It wasn’t perfect but it was a good tone setter for what I’m hoping will be an improved season three! I’m glad live action Star Trek is back, despite the fact that Lower Decks did an excellent job and it’s own right

8/10

Wise......you didn't miss anything of note.
Wow... nice.

So... I guess I was the only one who found most of the Federation scenes in the end (the reverence of Waiting Guy... although I liked his acting/ flag/ commission etc.) very hokey and full of pathos?

I really liked that about it too. It’s nice that the designers are free to imagine the future again instead of tweaking what came before. At a certain point, updating the traditional Trek gear/bridge/etc. starts to feel like a copy of a copy of a copy, even if they add a purple stripe.

I hope the storytelling proves to have the same freshness.

I'm sure you're not the only one but I could not describe it as "hokey."

"all Dilithium Exploded" So.. What about Artificial Singularity cores?
You'd think after 120 years somebody would have synthesized a replacement for Dilithium as a catalizer for warp cores..

Love Book's ship! Like a B Wing!

I enjoyed it alot, looking forward to what they have to show!
The writers seem to have forgotten that you can use other things to power warp drive.

While I don’t entirely disagree, I also believe that 70% of the franchise is hokey and full of pathos, and I’ve never negatively judged Trek on that basis before, so I’m not going to start now.

It’s basically standard Star Trek fare. And since Star Trek is my favorite franchise....

As has been discussed already here, dilithium doesn’t power warp drive, but it is essential to the reaction process.

Since this is one of 13 episodes on the subject, let’s not pass judgement now on how horrific / inattentive the writers are quite yet.

Which may not be entirely inappropriate, especially as she has been conditioned to suppress emotions, and has more recently been learning to re-integrate them into her being.

Yeah it’s one of those things where when you think about it, as you said can make a lot of sense but just as a basic viewer of a tv show it can be a bit much.
