That was awesome. Following up on the themes which began last week, Lower Decks has decided to ditch the reset button and play for keeps. Going through the changes to the status quo:
  • Mariner's relationship with her mother is out in the open
  • Boimler is a Lt. Junior Grade - and on the Titan
  • Mariner and Boimler's dyad is broken up - for the time being.
  • Shaxs is dead
  • Rutherford has lost his implant - and memories
Basically of the four mains, Tendi is the only one who isn't really changed by the end of the episode. I felt like her plot with PeanutHamper was really the only part of the episode that didn't work very well. It was a really deep dive TNG reference, but it fit awkwardly into the rest of the plot - particularly because the show kept beating you over the head with situations where a normal personw would be upset, but Tendi is just perpetually perky and positive. I guess that's why she hasn't changed - nothing actually phases her.

I liked that they actually referenced earlier Lower Decks episodes as well. Obviously the prior episode and Badgie, but also more lowkey things which happened over the course of the season.

Also interesting how they did a "longer feature" for this episode, but it was only like four minutes longer than normal.

I can't wait to see how they deal with all of this for Season 2. Getting Boimler back onto the ship is going to be hard to do without it seeming forced. Maybe he's just not coming back? It would be better in some ways if they introduced a new ensign alongside Mariner rather than returning Boimler - particularly because the show implies that Mariner is going to "straighten out" and the central conflict of their relationship would be gone.

I guess I'm giving this a 6 (which means I think this is my second least favorite episode of season 1). My reason is simple: too much happened in a single episode. It's almost like this time, they did the movie (from last episode) but in lower decks. Like star trek beyond: start on a very interesting planet and premise before beaming out without a full resolution. Then meet surprisingly strong bad guy, have the crew be saved by in person heroism and tech. Then have them reset watching a ship being built. This episode did all of that, but with more character development AND more in-universe nods. This needed to be a 2-part episode to tell this story.

Holee wow I loved that! Easy 10 for me! I think Lower Decks officially might be the most fun I've had consistently with Star Trek. Ever. This is really what we've needed in Trek, particularly in the year 2020.

Titan! Riker! Troi! Pakleds! "TOS!" Animated Kirk and Spock! Beta III! RIKER'S FRIKKIN' JAZZ WARP TAGLINE! Boims gets a promotion TO the Titan! BADGEY! Shaxs is dead. :(

Love that Frakes has officially been involved in every TV Trek either as Riker or as a director (or both) since TNG.

Bring on Disco Season 3! But for now, I'm going to rewatch all of LDS. :)

That's something I hadn't considered, but it makes sense. There should be higher turnover in the Lower Decks.

With Boimler on the Titan, they might try to work in a Wesley cameo next season.

Phenomenal finale to a fantastic first season! The status quo has changed hasn't it?
Shaxs :( Rutherford :(, and Boimler has been promoted and transferred.

Animation was gorgeous as always; I was blown away at the destruction of the USS Slovang as it tried to warp away, not just from an artistic standpoint but also because of how surprising it was. We don't see many ships and their crews destroyed do we? Especially not a crew that we've met.

Glad to see Riker, Troi and the Titan show up to save the day!

It's amazing how much the LDS crew packed into ten 22-minute episodes; so much fun, so many easter eggs and references, and a whole lot of character work. I'm gonna miss the Cerritos and its crew as we wait for season 2.

Yeah, and the new ensign could have a very different personality, in order to conflict better with the new, more grown-up Mariner.

Maybe the shoe is on the other foot and she has to deal with someone who engages in some of the same antics she used to?

Great episode. I gave it a 10, although I rounded up because I am in a good mood. If I thought anything could have been done better, I think they didn't get enough out of Shaxs' death (my favorite character on the series).

OTOH, the Pakleds cast in the Borg role was hysterical. Brilliant!

I loved how the people of Beta III had gone back to worshipping Landru. It's the type of thing that if they did this story on TNG, it would have been too unbelievable and labelled a "re-hash". But now, here we are in 2020, and millions of Americans are getting ready to vote for a big orange turd again, even though that big orange turd is the worst president who ever presidented! And these knuckleheads actually believe that he's "very persuasive"!

I wonder if Rutherford will remain au naturel next season or if he'll have some other fancy new tech upgrade.

I suspect the latter.

Personally, I think they should leave Boimler on the Titan and introduce a new ensign in season 2. Bringing Boimler back to the Cerritos and making him an ensign again, would be a big reset button and a big step backwards IMO. Keeping Boimler on the Titan is a nice way of wrapping up his character arc.

Plus, we know Riker retires in a couple of years anyways so if Boimler eventually returns to the Cerritos it can be because of a change of command and crew.

Well, it could also be an interesting development if Boimler pulled a Mariner and got himself demoted back to the Cerritos- indicating just how much she has rubbed off on him.
