Michael Hogan fell and hit his head hard back in February, but didn't realize how serious it was and went to sleep. He was unable to be woken up and needed emergency surgery to stop a massive brain bleed. He's now completely paralyzed on the left side, has cognitive impairment and memory loss, and can't swallow. And because of COVID, he has no care team that can come in and help him. :(

I heard about this, and it's horrible. I really hope he recovers.
There's just one point I'm a little confused about. His family started crowd funding for his care, but I thought this kind of medical care was all free in Canada?

Canadian Medicare has its limits -- dental isn't covered in every province, for instance. From reading the fundraiser, though, it's not for medical care per se. It's for the combination of expensive necessary home renovations to accomodate his wheelchair -- hallways, bathrooms, doorways, an overhead lift to move him to and from bed and his wheelchair, a new vehicle to accommodate his chair (I would assume possibly a wheelchair lifting device to let him move up and down any stairs they may have), etc. I would infer from the description that Canadian Medicare won't necessarily pay for some of the ongoing nursing/assistant care he may need, so this fundraiser would generally supplement some of that care (since the family expects that Michael will never be able to work again and they aren't rich).

The bottom line is that Canadian Medicare is great, but doesn't go far enough. That's why I look to things like the NHS in the United Kingdom before I look to Canadian Medicare.

Shit, that's terrible. Horrible thing to happen in general, but especially now with the pandemic screwing the medical system over completely. Just awful.

What's really strange is - it's been...what? 7 months and we're just now hearing about this??

Apparently his wife was extremely reluctant to make this public and it took a great effort in convincing her to ask for help as it seems they are very private people.

Horrible what happened, he seems like a good guy and i hope he recovers well enough to be able to lead an unencumbered life sometime in the future.

Yes, that about sums it up. At most, Medicare covers the basics. If it's something expensive, it might just cover a portion of it. For things like cancer care or and important surgeries, it's almost never enough and it's why many end up having to use crowdfunding. Have a friend whose husband is going through cancer care and their life savings have been reduced quite a bit through having to deal with it for years on end.
