What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Well then I'm very glad you're not a casting director. Forcing all those people to stay within imaginary "ethnicity" lines you have invented, reducing them to genes and family trees.
Don't forget nationality on top of Ethnic Heritage =D

That's horrible. Do you want them to carry around identification cards so that the casting directors can verify their "authenticity"?
Sure, and have required DNA Ancestry tests for every actor while we're at it to prove their claims.

And again, what if they don't want to play the characters of their ethnicity? Why fence everybody in like that?
Where all Homo Sapiens.
We're all Homo Sapiens. There are plenty of "Alien Characters" ie. Non-Humans to portray.

I think Star Trek was a good progressive show in the sense that it showed a post-racial society as a normal thing. It also promoted ideas like the value of people over profit and material goods, that violence (or even peace) is not always the answer, the importance of science and better understanding your world (even if the science presented was iffy), not over relying on machines and computers, among other things. It was the values that it preached that make it special, not because it might have had the first interracial kiss on TV. It didn't always get it right, especially with regard toward its treatment of women, but I think it tried its best to address the social and political issues of the time without getting too ham-fisted about it.

When was the last time main characters came from India, Pakistan or Burma on a Star Trek show
While not a main character, a portion of the fan base were absolutely crazy about Captain Robau.0
One is pretending to be something else.
Is that what actors do?
If I had a French Character, I'd prefer to find an actual Frenchmen.
Bad news for Patrick Stewart.
NBC also told Rod to get rid of Number One because she ranked too high, and the actress was his mistress. shame on them
If Roddenberry had simply recast the role, then Kirk would of had a female first officer during TOS. But Majel had already slept with Roddenberry for the role.

This is absurd. Hollywood isn’t going to hire because of ethnic origin anytime soon, and the greater question is why should they?

All they need do is hire someone who is competent in the role.
So should Hollywood have hired the best Black Actress to play the lead character in the live action Mulan?
Or a White Actress to play the lead character?
What about a Korean/Japanese Actress to play a Chinese character?

Or should Hollywood have changed the story to fit any ethnicity?

Or should Hollywood have stayed the course and hire Chinese Actors to fit the story?

Barrett already said she was determined to have a role on Star Trek, regardless.

Is it bad if i say i wouldn’t have cared? i care about competency, not ethnicity

Well, plenty of Chinese people would care.
The story of Mulan is a ethnic folk tale.
To try to modify it would be a huge insult to the target audience.
That's why Hollywood went as accurate as they could in hiring the Chinese cast.
Chinese folks don't want to see non-chinese portray Chinese characters.

It's a big thing in Asia.

South Koreans don't want Japanese people to portray Koreans.

And vice versa.

I don’t know what to tell you. I am half black but I don’t expect Hollywood to represent my interests, it’s all down to money talking.

I would rather someone of the wrong ethnicity represent me, than have another half breed represent me and screw it up.

I'd rather a Half White / Half Black actor represent you accurately then leave it to some rando that Hollywood thinks is better to portray you.

Do you want them to hire a Middle Eastern guy to portray you?
What about a Japanese actor?
What about a Irish actor?

Or we can just find a Half Black & Half White actor to portray you accurately.

Nice. You know you have no leg to stand on, so you become facetious.

Again you are mixing up the actual problem of whitewashing characters and your imaginary stuff where its, somehow a hate-crime when a Swede plays a Norwegian character.

I only know Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li rocked in "Memoirs of a Geisha"
I know the movie and the book are problematic in their own way, but those two actresses absolutely owned their characters, despite not having your magical authenticity genes, and their performances were wonderful.

I don’t want an ethnic actor to represent me, and screw it up. I would rather they cast the wrong ethnicity in the role than do that. at least then we can blame it on mis-casting.

I'm 100% serious.

Again you are mixing up the actual problem of whitewashing characters and your imaginary stuff where its, somehow a hate-crime when a Swede plays a Norwegian character.
It is in my books.

That's "Hollywoods" interpretation of a novel. Not the way I would've done things.
