The DS9 intro redone in 4K...breathtaking!!

Fantastic, really well made. I'd forgotten what a memorable Trek theme tune sounded like. That Nebula class is a beauty too.

This is obviously very well done and looks really good, but what this also brought home for me is how much better the physical effects work still looks. Sure, its resolution is much lower, but the reality of the comet, the station and the wormhole are much more convincing than their computer-generated counterparts. It's hard to describe why exactly that is, but for some reason the particles in the comet and the wormhole look much too deliberate in the CG version compared to the more natural randomness in the original effects. And while the recreated station model seems to have much more visible detail, it just doesn't feel as heavy, monumental and real as the physical model filmed by an optical camera. Again, this looks really nice, but I would never trade it for the original.

I'm fairly certain that the comet trail and the wormhole in the original intro were CG as well.

That’s pretty awesome and I’m not easily impressed by some of these fan remastering or recreations. It really shows the beauty of the station in a way SD never really did.

I believe you are correct. I do remember, though, that parts of the wormhole, for example, were created by physically filming several layers of smoke, which were then composited on a computer to create the effect, which I guess means they were not completely created on a computer in the modern sense.

Still, my point was less about the specific technique being used but more about how much more organic and convincingly realistic the original effects look to me. As I said, I am in awe of the skills presented in this YouTube clip. But most of it looks like a very well done cut scene from a computer game to me rather than the “real” thing from the show. It's hard to pinpoint for me why that is.

ETA: Looking at it again, I think it's because the creator of this clip has done away with many of the analog artefacts we associate with “realness” which in turn makes the models and effects look almost too clean. There doesn't seem to be much visible motion blur, chromatic aberration and film grain that would help to sell the images as real.

Yeah it's nice but feels a bit video game or CG animated cartoon, too much brightness and colour in places. Needs more grit. As someone who fails miserably at making CGI space scenes it's still a remarkable achievement and the kind of thing I would love to be able to make.

I have my quibbles with it...the motion felt a bit too smooth and I think it was a little too clearly CGI at some points...but overall it's pretty amazing, and watching it did make me tempted to start rewatching the series, so I'd call it mission accomplished.

Watching it on Youtube doesn't do anything for me. No full screen available, so it's the size of two postage stamps put next to each other on my screen, and then is covered with ads most of the time.

The station looks good, but the one thing that stands out badly is the asteroid. It should be a much darker gray and organic looking. In looks cartoonish in this which feels at odds with the series tone, feeling like someone just threw in a stock asteroid model without regard to the aesthetics.

tl;dr - it looks fake.

And I agree with you.

Everything was CGI - it was like a high res videogame cutscene. They didn't do a very good job lighting the CGI DS9 model (IMO); and they took some liberties with the docked Nebula Class ship too (not that it looked bad per se - but you could tell it was a heavily modified Nebula class ship).

In the original opening there was no CGI DS9 model. That was the physical model! The only time DS9 was a CGI model was the final shot of it in “What You Leave Behind”.

U, I was specifically refering to the $K redo that was linked. You realize it was 100% CGI and whomever did it didn't take/reuse any footage from an actual DS9 episode, right? That was plainly obvious as again, the lightning of their DS9 CGI model wasn't very well done (IMO).

I realize that was CGI. However you were replying to a quote about the original.
