NBA 2019-2020 "Parity" Bites

One game in and already refs are helping the stars. Giannis hits Theis in the groin with 5 fouls. They review for a hostile act, and because there is none they don’t even call a personal foul.

He should have been fouled out there, if Bucks win, 2 days in and already refs changed a game’s outcome.

Bucks opted out of tonight's game, then two more NBA games postponed as well. That's all three games for tonight. Now that's a peaceful protest.

I think the NBA season is over. I can’t see anything that could happen at this point that would entice the players to continue. Too bad, was looking forward to celebrating No. 17 this year.

We'll see how this goes. The whole situation is weird to me, why would you give up a national platform to protest? I feel like they could have made more powerful messages by leveraging their platform than they can by stepping away from it.

And the whole thing of agreeing to go to the bubble then stepping away at a random point in the middle of the playoffs? I feel like they have great intent here but bungled the execution to the point of being totally ineffectual.

It wouldn’t have been some “random point,” it would have been at a point following yet another blatant (attempted) killing of an unarmed Black person by police.

However, although I would definitely have supported the players stopping the playoffs, I’m cool with their decision to continue.

Those virtual fans have to be sized somehow because those shots are just not right. It's an interesting playoffs so far, absent the Kings (of course) and Spurs (dang it), and it'll be interesting to see if there's a 4-bubble solution for next season before this Corona virus runs its course. Wonder where Giannis will go next year after the Heat beat the Bucks?

So, Giannis unfollows all of his teammates on social media (guess who’s NOT taking responsibility for the Bucks’ and elimination), and just had a 3 hour meeting with Bucks management, including the owner. Per reports, they assured Giannis that they were committed to getting better players. Probably also got some insight as to who he might like to run with. Gonna be an interesting off season.

Clips and Nuggs are pretty evenly matched. Clips weren’t able to win 3 in a row and I don’t think Nuggs will either, so I’m picking the Clips to advance but rooting for the Nuggets.

So happy I was wrong about Nuggs/Clips. This is being called the greatest collapse in NBA history. Clips were one of the most undeservedly arrogant teams ever. They acted like they had already won the championship when they signed Kawhi and then mortgaged their future for Paul George.

They built a team with talent but no chemistry which was then mishandled by the continuously overrated Doc Rivers. Game 7 was also a referendum on Kawhi’s much touted leadership ability. When his team needed him most, he, along with their other “superstar” disappeared.

Basketball gods are always watching.

Even if Celtics don't get past Heat, seeing Tatum perform consistently in the playoffs like this makes me really excited for the future. Assuming the expected max extension happens, we have at least two more years of Tatum/Brown/Walker/Smart as the core, Tatum and Brown through their prime. Tatum is going to be a top five player in a year or two *and* overperforms in the playoffs.

And assuming Hayward either exercises his options or restructures for less, we go into next season saying Gordon Hayward is our 5th best player. If we can also get a true center, watch out next year.

Lakers a near sure bet to get the trophy, but didn't they also handcuff themselves a bit for the future?
Not really. We owe the Pels two more firsts, ‘22 and ‘24, and pick swaps, which are not likely to be implemented, in ‘23 and ‘25. We retain our 2020 first rounder. But if you want to win at the highest levels, you have to be willing to make bold moves.

But we’ll still have Bron, at least through ‘22, and AD likely for the next 5-7 years or so. With him as a foundational piece, we can attract valuable free agents and remain competitive. By the time AD is done, hopefully after multiple championships, we’ll have all our picks, or at least the ones we’ve chosen to keep. Rob Pelinka really should get some votes as Executive of the Year.

Well, congrats to Pat Riley and the Heat for getting to the Finals . This is Pat Riley’s something like 8th time I think. Interesting that in the last 10 years, while Danny Ainge was getting all of the attention for his vaunted war chest, Riley not only puts together a conf Finals team, he actually gets his team to the Finals before Ainge and with no superstars.

As for my team, the Lakers have been one of the most maligned legit contenders in many many years. So, congrats to Vogel, AD, and especially LeBton. Looking forward to a tough series against a team that is disciplined and committed to defense. Probably going to be a low scoring physical series.

Let’s get it!

 I give the Heat credit for not throwing in the last night, many teams have. It’s a Riles/Spo team so not really too surprised. Tomorrow’s another day.

LA Lakers, 2020 NBA champs!!!

This might be my favorite Lakers championship team, but not my fav championship. From the moment the Clips signed Paul George and Kawhi last summer, Clips were the “experts’ sexy choice as eventual NBA champs. They kind of ignored the Lakers who quietly put together the best season in the Western Conf. I’v never seen a team with better chemistry, cohesion, and general togetherness.

This sense of family flowed from ownership through LeBron and the coaches, to the players.

Serious shoutout to the NBA and Adam Silver for leading America during the height of the pandemic when they shut down operations in March which led to the nation’s shutdown, something that should have been done weeks before. The league put players and staff safety ahead of profit and worked out a way to finish their season without endangering people’s lives.

Also, the NBA’s role in keeping the issue of racially motivated police brutality and social justice on the front burner of the public eye, cannot be understated. Shows how far one can go with some courage and togetherness.

So, hail to the NBA and my team forever, the Los Angeles Lakers!

Anyone who takes Lebron’s side in the GOAT debate needs to answer how many Jordan could have won if he had the option of hopping between teams wherever other superstars would follow him.

I find the GOAT arguments to be extremely boring and I don’t participate. I’m a Lakers fan, so championships are the thing that floats my boat. :D

But regarding your premise, keep in mind that if Jordan could have changed teams, so could other players. That means that other star players could have gotten together to form super teams . I don’t know what makes you think Jordan would be the only player capable of forming a great team.

My point is that jumping teams might have actually cost Jordan rings as well as stats, which might have cost him some GOAT cache.

All kinds of GOAT stuff is coming up on my Facebook feed. I just think if Jordan had played every year and as long as James he could have had a 10-peat. And that was without getting together with David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon.
