Do you think that a live action version of LDS will pop up in the future? Wouldn't it be cool to see an older Boimler or Mariner on Picard, played by the actors who do the voices? It would help canonizing LDS even further I think.

I suppose they could get away with a small namecheck or cameo, but it could be jarring.

I really would prefer LDS to remain isolated in it's own corner of the Trekverse.

I could see the Cerritos or another California-class starship making a brief background appearance in PIC, but that's about it. I kind of see the LD era as being just a brief period in Starfleet history.

Agreed. Recreating the 2380s look in love action would be too expensive, I can’t see it happen in the foreseeable future.

I can't see more than a namedrop here and there. But you never know, the long-time animated Batman played a live-action version in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Never say never.

I don't know if it will, but I would love to see them do that at some point. Tawny Newsome as a live action Mariner on Picard or an episode of Short Trek would be awesome. As would seeing the Cerritos or a California class ship in the background.

Can't be more canon than it is right now, which is completely.

I don't watch those live action DC shows, but as a big fan of Batman: The Animated Series it's so cool to see that they brought on Kevin Conroy to play an old Batman. Just had a look at a YouTube clip; that exo-suit looks awful, but hearing his voice is a treat.

This. Canon isn't a matter of degrees. It is either canon, or it isn't.

And no on the live action version. Just let this be, it is fun.

Why limit the series by having it be live action at some point? When they have a blank slate to be as creative and imaginative as they want, why then have to try and put that back in the bottle to be another show with too many dull humans and aliens that are only distinguished with some latex glued to their foreheads?

Can't speak for everybody, but I assume most people think of this as a one-time special event, not a permanent change to live action. Lower Decks is an animated show and I think ultimately it should stay that way.

When live action has a one-time animation special (such as FarScape) you see the creativity they have, trying to reverse the process wouldn't be nearly as successful I'd think.

Personally I think it's much more reasonable to expect a cameo appearance of one of the voice actors or the Cerritos in the background. I wouldn't expect them to recreate the sets, uniforms etc.

I'd say probably cameo. Not sure what canon status has to do with it.

But, right now, I'd say just let it be itself.

Elsewhere, in a post I can't find right now, someone claimed they saw an interview with McMahan in which he stated that the reason the characters so closely resemble their voice actors is because CBS wanted to be able to port them into live action if the need arose, without having to recast. I haven't been able to track down this interview, so I can't confirm whether it's real or if McMahan was being serious with his comment.

FWIW, I did notice that with the exception of Tatasciore, all of the voice actors for the main cast also do live-action acting, so it does seem like they made it a point to hire actors who don't do voice performances exclusively.

They should do live-action wraparounds like the old Three Stooges Cartoon. :D

I’d love a cameo. Perhaps Boimler becomes captain of the Cerritos by Picards (the shows) time. They could hail La Sirena, but it’s video comms are down and can’t be put up on screen, only voice comms. Picard could quip that he’s not surprised it’s video comms are down as it’s one of the oldest ships still in Starfleet and has a habit of being unreliable. Boimler could talk to the La Sirena crew, asking them what they’re doing before letting them get on their way.

Except for a “real life” render of the ship (which would be amazing!), they never actually show the “real life” cast. It could become a in joke that we only ever hear them, never see them, on the live action shows.

I can't find it right now, but I remember an interview with McMahan where he says that if there ever was a live action appearance of Mariner, he would want Newsome to portray her. Maybe that's what you are thinking of?

Nope, I've read that interview, too. The comment I'm thinking of was referencing a different interview/statement. Which, again, I haven't been able to source and could very well be BS.

It would be kinda neat, but might be weird if they didn't use the same voice actors, which would only work if the voice actors actually look like the characters.
