Yes, it’s like explaining why Number One, Chapel, and Luxwanna Troi all look and sound alike.

Although I’m having fun with those. Same actor, duh.

Oh, it is a huge waste of time to worry about, but that is what Trek has devoted episodes to, making it seem more important than it actually is.

Of course...my mistake. I shall submit myself for reeducation.

    Please ignore the screams.

What gave you that idea??:lol::lol:

At best, canon is a guide, at worst, it's a sledgehammer wielded by really unimaginative anti-fans.

My head canon works fine, and is the only canon I need.

It doesn't offer an explanation, but the New Frontier novels do have fun with it. Various characters note Robin Lefflers mom looks like Number One, Christine Chappell and Lwaxana Troi, and sounds like the computer.

Head canon ftw! I love how David references the Barrett characters, as if you couldn’t tell. I think it’s his little inside joke.

The Other Franchise had(has?) someone being paid to keep track of it all:

Looks like they care about canon. Not caring best way although I am not above using canon as a weapon to win a dispute (not on this site of course. ahem)

Madge Sinclair's role as the USS Saratoga's captain in Star Trek IV would indicate to me that she was a commander and on the track toward captaincy during the TOS years.

Plus its a bit stupid to have a female XO but if something happens to the Captain she has to step aside so her subordinate male officer can take over. The idea behind the 23rd century humanity is social progress not backwardness. Makes as much sense as an all alien Starfleet ship but only human captains allowed. Would humans in the 23rd century legally practice such blatant racism and sexism?

I don’t think I’ll ever use the term ‘canon’ again after these last two threads.

If anyone catches me doing it again after this comment, rip me a new one ;)

I’ve got the old Franz Joseph fold out ‘Star Trek Blueprints’ with that faux woodgrain vinyl case they came in, and as I was looking over deck 16, sick bay, a thought passed through unbidden: are these blueprints canon?

    Then I remembered that I didn’t care.

We will never see a fully accurate deck by deck visual description of the Enterprise accepted by a majority of fans, just enjoy them and you decide what's right and what is wrong.

I’ve had them since the aughts, never really looked at them until lately. I “need” them for a new wastetime pursuit of mine, those ships were huge! You could serve the entire 5 yr mission and never cross paths all of them.

I had the feeling those Starship Class vessels were meant for just that, to seek out new life and rarely ever return to Earth. Those 12 ships would just... keep going and going, when the crew's tour of duty was over, they would either add another 5 year mission or get re-assigned to another ship or alien government or experiment on other means of exploring the galaxy.

How interesting it could've been if TMP had Starfleet command somewhere else in the galaxy, on another planet, showing how much UFP had progressed? It would've blew audiences minds, the Enterprise had to travel back to Earth to save it from Vgr.

Having the UFP located on earth is kinda like drawing a big red bullseye on earth though.

Those vulcans knew what they were doing
