Star Trek 14

ID was one rewrite away from being great. 4 years was way too long. They knew were they wanted to go but not one hundred percent how to get there.

It didn't really need to be much of a rewrite.

The film would have been so much better had Abrams not been so obsessed with his mystery box -- just like the sequel trilogy.

In this world of Snyder cuts and post finished product revising, you would think there'd be a clamour to tweak Into Darkness. Perhaps going back and filming flashbacks or inserts that show Khan's backstory, and how it deviated by being discovered years earlier by Section 31. Integrating some of the graphic novel's attempt to have him still be Montalban's Khan up until his John Harrison identity was created. As apparently the biggest box-office gross of the franchise, but polarized opinion among the fanbase, there's surely scope for such another look at the film? Either seeing if there's anything interesting among what they did shoot and abandoned, or to create footage that makes some of the questionable decisions fit better. Although I'm NOT sure what you can do with Quinto-Spock screaming "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"... which was greeted with laughter as the pin suddenly dropped that this was one TWOK homage too many.

To the annoyance of some, whatever they did to make a "Special Edition" extended take on Into Darkness "special", it would surely push the film's takings even further ahead, making it the undisputed most successful Star Trek film...

and they could tweak Beyond abit so the Abronath is a time device, the planet is ancient earth and Krall and co are the Annunaki, the Franklin is the NX01 Enterprise, the Yorktown is 23rd century earth, the JJprise being destroyed gets moved near the end of the film attempting to repair the timeline fighting Nero and the Narada, and have Shatner film a few scenes in his backyard with a socially distanced Pine discussing destiny and stuff #ReleasetheOrciCut

you're bonkers! ;) But yeah this could be fun!

The next movie needs to have a very engaging plot that appeals to a wide audience.

I'm thinking that Rojan and company from TOS would be fertile ground to grow a good story.

Suppose they got back to the Andromeda galaxy faster than expected. The whole taking-on-human-form could cause a lot of culture controversy. Those who are enthralled by the whole human thing versus those who want to keep their culture purely Andromedan. The keep-it-pure faction could mount an invasion force bent on destroying all of humanity, to lessen the already bad contamination. In an ironic twist, whereas Klingons, Romulans, etc, see themselves as vastly different than humans, the Andromedans do not and want to eliminate them all.

This kind of a plot could work as a complete reboot, or be adapted to the Kelvinverse.

Lots of opportunity to draw parallels with cultural snobbery, prejudice, phobias, and desired isolationism that still exist here on Earth today.

Hawley confirms his script would use new characters:
https://trekmovie.com/2020/09/15/no...feature-new-crew-project-currently-in-stasis/

So it seems like they have 3 completed scripts:
The original 4th Kelvin movie guest starring Kirk's dad
Tarantino Trek
Hawley Trek

Now they need to make a choice, pick one of these or start from scratch. According to trekmovie the first one is the favorite. It makes sense as that one uses the Kelvin characters so they just need to sign the actors, especially the 2 Chris dudes.

The Hawley movie with new characters would be more of a risk but with more potential. They would have to cast the new characters but maybe save money since they don't have to pay them too much.

The Tarantino one is the most interesting. It's not clear which timeline this one is going to be. But if I had to guess I would say it will be neither Prime or Kelvin, it would be it's own timeline. This is because even the non-scifi Tarantino movies are in an alternate timeline (e.g. Inglourious Basterds & Once upon a time in Hollywood). Whatever timeline it is they can probably still use the Kelvin cast. But they are obviously reluctant to make this without QT as a director.

Paramount be looking at Tenet and thinking, "Nah, we'll just wait and commission 11 more scripts until making movies actually has a chance of making a profit again"

I'd like to say just writing competing scripts is cheaper than actually making movies, but l imagine it inflated Beyond's budget and contributed to the fix Star Trek movies are currently in. God knows what unfair burden three pre-production budgets will eventually add to the next one. Basically setting the thing up to fail, before a single frame of it is even shot. It's all just so much imaginary armchair producing with hindsight from me, but let's say they originally went with Bob Orci's Into Oblivion pitch with somebody else drafted into the Director's chair, as they considered him too risky. Then they went to Lin and Pegg for their Beyond, before the iron became as cold as it is right now. How much better would that have basically been to be in that position?

I'm guessing it only costs the studio a few hundred thousand to have a script written. I doubt they spent more than 1M in prepro on Orci's idea. But I really don't know, it's just a guess.

These new Trek movies are too expensive to turn much of a profit. The main culprit is all the action and spectacle. That stuff is expensive. They're going to have to cut back on it. The cast gets more expensive with each film also.

Yeah the theatres are pretty quiet at the moment from what I have seen, they may as well just start releasing films straight to the streaming services instead like Disney+ have been doing.

I remember seeing the first Jurassic Park in the cinema when it came out, truly a film that screams for a massive screen.

The desire to see big films on big screens will never disappear completely but the general publics preference for avoiding large groups of people and the ever increasing cost of tickets (snacks and drinks) makes it a none starter for many.

What Hawley is planing to do is write a story base of events of how the Federation became the Federation and how it didn't become in being. Something happen that could kept the Federation being form. It also sound like that the starship and it crew won't be Starfleet. Most likely a starship and crew belonging to the Earth Space Navy.
If done, it won't be one movie. Maybe 3 or 5 part movie.

What was the concept for Orci's movie? Or the earlier versions of Beyond? I don't know very much about the feature films post 2009. Watched them each once, life is too busy to watch movies that made me mad. Lol.
