Star Citizen

I believe it would be hard to prove if Roberts knows they won't be able to release a game or if he is actually just that deluded.
I think something will eventually be released. I think they'll have to, if pushed by governments, slap a few more things together and release it. I joined in on the free play this weekend, and what little seems to be working does okay. I mean, it's definitely an Alpha, but workable. At least backers would have something tangible.

I believe that for the past two years, Roberts has been trying to get something out. Its just it'll never be anything resembling the actual promised game.

 200 million pounds?? This is like the Axanar boondoggle raised to several orders of magnitude higher, and going on nearly twice as long. I had no idea it’s pulled in that kind of bank.

I am no fan, but it’s not quite like axanar, in that there’s a product somewhere at least. Work has been done.

Very good point. With all the hype over this thing, I am kind of interested in seeing what it's like. It will have stiff competition against Bethesda's Starfield if rumors of both releases next year wind up happening.

Sooo.. what would be the point of Star Citizen when Elite Dangerous will tackle one of its last main features soon (and will probably make it work well on launch date)?

That will depend on how it is implemented. As you've said, it's a main feature in Star Citizen, so if ED can manage to implement it with a similar level of depth, then it'll be competitive in that area. Also there's the graphics and the fact SC has huge cities that you can walk about already.

All we've seen so far though is a janky specially made trailer.

I've been playing Elite Dangerous, I'm really enjoying it. I avoided Star Citizen since everything I've read about it treats it as a scam while ED is a playable game that I haven't experienced a single issue with so far.

Played it too years ago but once my Pro Hotas setup crapped out i haven't found a suitable replacement in the middle category - don't want some cheap stuff but i'm also not too big of a flightsim player to invest 300+ in a decent stick/throttle combo. However while my setup worked it was so fantastic, especially docking and landing at a space station - felt like Han Solo docking the Falcon at Mos Eisley when i smooth drop onto the platform.

Elite Dangerous did everything right that Star Citizen did wrong - they focused on the core of the game and made sure that worked. It may not have the superslick look of Star Citizen (i love their starship designs) but it looks well and plays even better. Once that worked and was successful the developers expanded the game bit by bit.. planetary landing, expanding the scope, introducing carriers now and later an FPS element.

The only thing that surpasses this is Eve Online but that's a completely different animal (though i love reading articles of its backstabbing politics and resulting superbattles and wars).

This is four years old, but nothing has really improved.

Sadly the majority of problems with SC are all the fault of CR, so I doubt they'll ever be corrected. One of my biggest issues is with him hiring celebs, who are not only crazy expensive, they also have little experience with voice acting and motion capture AND they'd be difficult to rehire for line changes. If he used experienced voice actors not only would he get better acting, he'd also cut the costs significantly. He probably spent millions on those celebrities, whereas a bunch of voice actors would be lucky to reach one million.

I'd certainly not recommend anyone buy even the cheapest game package (just join for the "free flight" weekends whenever they are), atleast not until SQ42 starts getting pumped out.

Despite that though, what is there is pretty awesome. Its just not much to show for all the years it's been in development. To be fair, a lot of the stuff they'll be working on at the moment is for SQ42, hence why we're getting weird things like a body dragging mechanic (though that does have some useful gameplay elements when it comes to the PU).

I hate to keep on beating a drum, but if you're invested in this Ponzi scheme, get the fuck out.

Look at it this way: CIG literally has pre-sold capital ships that require more players than a single server can handle at any given time.

I still can't believe this is ongoing.

I don't know the more I follow this I keep thinking of recent things like the Ataribox.. Something that will never happen.

I would feel a lot of sadness for people that invested money into this and were excited hoping for a great new game and that they had some input into this and now it's all gone. Also heartbreaking for those that did invest and can't recoup losses or were not that financial but wanted to put money into something they liked.
