I imagine a few people were eaten.
Having slept on it a bit, I woke up still not liking it. Still it had a story and plot that was at least as serviceable as the Orville pilot, and ine that was solid, unlike Discovery .. it just moved way too fast.
ORVILLE PILOT
STORY: Ed takes command but has to work with his ex wife, who cheated on him. She put his name up for the position, actually.
PLOT: Bad guys want MacGuffin that Orville has.
LOWER DECKS
STORY: Ensign wants to play by the rules but is told to report on misbehavior on the ensign who doesn't, as she is the captain's daughter.
PLOT: strange desease/ cure plot
I actually respect the attempt at simple straightforward storytelling here. If it was 46 minutes and live action it would gave been solid , if not classic, Trek episode
Honestly I really needed some light humor and this was perfect in that sense. With all the stress I've been having during this pandemic, I've been losing my smile so to speak. Something like this is really a good cathartic release in all this stress and I think it really sticks to the spirit of Star Trek.
so i expected to hate it due to the poor trailer but wow this is pretty good if all episode are as excellent as this one we're in for a pretty good time.
i give this one 8/10 much better than Picard already
oh! there's an Edosian in the season trailer i wonder if we're gonna see more classic TAS species hope we see some Aurelian

Honestly, I could see this show really growing on me and becoming a favorite. We finally get an optimistic TNG series. Just goes to show that TPTB can do optimistic trek if they wanted to, they just don't want DISC or PIC to be that kind of show.
The intro was great. Loved the ship turning around to avoid the Borg-Romulan battle. Loved the TNG like intro with the seeing the ship and space. Everything seemed very authentic to TNG from the look of the ship, the holodeck, the phasers, the sounds, the transporter effect etc... I definitely appreciated that a lot. It had some nice meta jokes. Mariner was a bit annoying but overall I think all the characters are enjoyable. Did not see Mariner being the captain's daughter but it explains a lot.
Overall, I enjoyed it. If the show can continue to deliver enjoyable stories with lots of call backs to TOS or TNG, I will be very happy.
My advice though: I think the show needs to slow down a bit. It's like the show is hyped up on red bull. Or maybe it's just Mariner that is hyped on the Trek version of red bull. LOL. It felt way too quick paced. Some jokes could have landed better if they had paused a bit after the punch line.

I miss The Orville not being brought up in every CBSAA Star Trek thread. Oh wait. That's never happened.
As I said, I feel like the main issue with the episode is that - while a good episode - it fails as a pilot because the main characters are not introduced in great enough detail. It's basically a Mariner/Boimler episode, and that's it.
Of course, neither Discovery nor Picard had a true pilot episode.
I am SHOCKED!
The Troi/ jumpsuit thing being her one memorable thing (compared to why everyone would remember the male TNG staff and Spock etc.) was exactly the point of the joke, I thought. Much as I loved Sirtis, the character was usually pointless and poorly written, meant to be the eye candy. So yeah, the show is partly a spoof and I like that. It remains to be seen how good of a spoof it gets, but so far I'm fine.

I've never seen an episode of The Orville. Some trailers, some scenes. No appeal for me there. Saw a scene today with the actress who played Kassidy on DS9, walking in on her robot boyfriend/husband in underwear. And apparently that's funny AND smart as hell for some reason. Maybe it's because it was out of context, but I've never been drawn to the idea of Orville.
It basically feels like Seth Macfarlane trying to rebuild his childhood as a Trekkie and him being the captain. Something all Trekkies want. He just has the money to get it done I guess.
I've watched the series to date. Even with Star Trek, there are some aspects that just don't land. But Orville is entertaining, please don't mistake me, and I believe there is enough room for Orville and CBSAA Trek to exist without the constant, and I do mean CONSTANT comparisons.

I get that Tendi is new on the ship. Boimler goes on an away mission. There’s a zombie outbreak. At the end, the ensigns meet in Ten Forward.
Plus, does any character say “Cerritos” out loud so we know how it’s pronounced?

I can see hiw seeing these snippets out of context would yield that reaction. It's similar to my reaction to Galaxy Quest, or Trek-lite shows like Andromeda or Earth Final Conflict.
But at some point Orville, in watching it, just started working. Check out episides like Majority Rull, New Horizons, or Mad Idoltary. Or episides that work in oairs despite the distance between their air dates (Like About a Girl and Sanctuary or Krill ans Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes)
Getting back to Lower Decks.. the story was surprisingly solid. Would have worked as a drams. But it was way too fast, too hyper, and to gimmicky
