The conflicting accounts of Nichelle Nichols meeting MLK (with sources)

I personally don't care if the story is true or not.
Its a great story and has a great message.
I'm sure nothing malicious is meant by it.
I mean maybe relatives of MLK might take offence. I supposed I might be miffed if someone said my father had told them something profound and I knew they'd never met them.

Some of you stay trying to spit on Nichelle Nichols' legacy. I can't believe that there are people on this board doubting the veracity of this story. Why is this so unbelievable for some of you? Why would Nichelle Nichols lie about something like this? Come on now. Makes no sense to me. That's one hell of a story to dream up. There is always some BS with some of you.

It's true unless one of you can prove otherwise. Sheez!

I'm sure that if this story was fiction, MLK's widow, Coretta Scott King who died in 2005, would have debunked the story with a quickness back in the 80s, especially the part about Star Trek being the only show he allowed his children to stay up at night to watch. Coretta would have definitely corrected Nichelle if that wasn't true.

It's a good story if it's true.
If it's not true, it's a lie, not a good story.
If it's told as fiction, then maybe it's a good story. But she has related it as factual.
So it matters if it is true or a lie. Or partly each.

That's not true.

So what you're saying straight out is Nichelle is a liar - that's the only way to interpret your response. I'm definitely going to push against that narrative.

I will repeat. Her story is true unless one of you can prove otherwise.

You don't get to piss on Nichelle Nichols.

But I think I'll just put you on "Ignore."

Telling people you're putting them on ignore is generally frowned on by the mods.

Nichelle's various accounts are in places contradictory. That much is certain. Where reality actually lies is probably lost to history.

No it isn't. They are just saying that something is not automatically a fact just because someone said it is. Every person you have ever met has said something that is not factual, whether they knew it or not.

"Liar" is so black and white. There's every chance that Nichelle believes the story 100% regardless of what actually happened, and lying is generally looked upon as an intentional act, not an accidental one. If we are to treat any mistruth as a lie, then Nichelle is a proven liar as several versions of the story do not match up. I personally would not call her a liar just because the story isn't consistent.

Nothing wrong with a good "inspirational story", even if it may not be completely factual. But there's also nothing wrong with digging into the facts of the story.

Any chance to get the story from hearsay sources, such as someone who was on set. If the meeting happened, I'm sure she would have told the story immediately to her costars and staff. A simple, "yes, she did mention the meeting" would help confirm that part of the story. Really reaching...

I heard Barack Obama was a Star Trek and Nichelle Nichols fan - does anyone believe that?

Nichols also said she met MLKs family several times and hung around with him on occasion and his entourage when he was in town. Pretty easy for someone disprove. If they wanted to.

Someone tells a story, it's automatically completely true? That's not how I do life frankly. Especially where entertainers are concerned.

Jay Leno, a very nice man, was famous for embellishing. Once he was telling a colleague a story about an incident awhile back. Finally the colleague had to tell him to stop it -- it had actually happened to him, not Jay!

I don't think that's what he said. It was more a philosophical argument about whether or not something is automatically true unless proven false. And no one is "pissing on Nichelle Nichols". In any event, telling someone you're putting them on ignore is considered trolling, so please let's drop it here.

So is backseat moderating...

;)

Conan O'Brien would disagree.

This sounds very much like Leno stole a joke, which is one of the worst things you can do in stand-up comedy.

I got overly wrapped up in this a few years ago, but honestly? What kind of losers are we that we're calling a woman a liar over a supposed incident 50 years ago?

Whether it happened or not, it hasn't changed my life one bit. I imagine that is true for the vast majority of folks.

Where did she say this?
