The plan is to scrap all location-based filming and shot entirely in a studio like Universal is doing with the next Jurassic World film.

I imagine they'll be making a lot of use of that virtual-set wraparound-screen technology they use on The Mandalorian.

Although that seems rather backward. I mean, we know that outdoor activities are safer than indoor ones, because aerosols disperse much faster outdoors. Unless it's more about limiting travel and interaction with people in different cities/areas.

They are going to try to resume production in September. The plan is to scrap all location-based filming and shot entirely in a studio like Universal is doing with the next Jurassic World film.

The Batman Reportedly Picking Up Production in September With One Major Change
Don't really see how that's a better option, given being indoors with recirculated air can spread the virus worse than being outdoors. Plus, being within a confined space makes social distancing harder.

Crowd control. Studios can control who gets on a lot. Can’t keep people off the streets. When shooting on location there will inevitability be a crowd of fans or website reporters trying to get a glimpse of what’s going on. They’re going to come into contact with PA’s whose job it is to keep them from crossing the barricades. Those same PAs will come into contact with other crew members and talent at the craft services table. There is no ideal solution to the COVID problem.

Its a risk they should not take; the size of a sound stage is not going to grant much of an advantage when any modern studio production (especially of a big budget fantasy film) has a large number of necessary talent behind & in front of the camera at any time. Social distancing under those circumstances...highly questionable regarding the safety for all involved, but you know...$$$..so the first instinct of self-preservation goes out of the window.

It's not $$$ I need to line my pockets... its the life of their entire industry. They simply can't remain shut down forever without studios going out of business.

I bet the bigger productions will do bubbles and testing the way sports have been doing with some success.

I suspect they will also utilize backlots more often. If not this film, other productions.

So much can be added digitally to expand and alter backgrounds. That gives natural light and fresh air and total control of crowds, real extras plus digital extras.

Not if they have similar video walls as The Mandalorian does.

Or just greenscreens and virtual sets, like they used before the video wall system came along. Although the video walls are an improvement on greenscreens because the interactive lighting between the subject and the background is more convincing. And a Batman film could presumably afford the cutting-edge stuff.

And yeah, there are backlots too. Backlots often do give a production a studio-bound look, but Dick's right that that can be ameliorated with digital set extensions.

The Madalorian sets were pretty amazing. I was blown away when I found out they weren't location shots.

For those that would like to get an idea at how filming inside could look

Wow, the way the stuff on the screen moves for the camera is really weird when you see it from an outside perspective.

Yeah, I had to think about it for a bit to remind myself why it did that. Though it just struck me that it's like that trick in Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation where Ethan and Benjy were hiding behind that screen and the image of the empty hallway was adjusting to track the guard's eyeline. It's all about parallax and simulating it on a 2D surface.

...Matt Reeves said that the movie would present the origin of several of the villains, including Catwoman, Riddler and Penguin. Furthermore, he called Batman in Gotham a criminologist experiment, and Bruce would start having doubts about his effect on Gotham.

Also said that while the movie is set in Year Two of Batman, the Gotham P.D. series on HBO Max was set in Year One, not before the first appearance of Batman as previously rumored.

I swear, this panel is just proving all my fears about this movie justified. I desperately want a version of Batman that isn't "grounded". I'm sick and tired of "grounded" DC heroes, especially Batman. Give me a billionaire with a bunch of unrealistic gadgets kicking ass and solving crimes. Not as a comedy, but like the actual comics. Batman could never happen in the real world, period, and they are beating a dead horse continually trying to make him more "real" in the movies.
