Hey everyone! I’m doing a poll on what everyone’s favourite story arcs are in various Star Trek series. Story arcs qualify if they are two-parters, three-parters, multi-episodes, and non-consecutive. This poll will be looking at DSC story arcs. Multiple votes are allowed. Vote and discuss your choices.
The Mirror Universe arc is my favorite; with the Red Angel as the runner-up. But it's a photo-finish. Depending on what I'm in the mood for, they could just as easily switch places.
As much as I love DS9, they dropped the ball hard when it came to the mirror universe. I was happy never to see it again, but somehow DSC managed to pull me back in. Easily my favourite arc. Controversially, I also love what they did with Lorca, but that’s a conversation for another time.
Red Angel was a well done mystery for the most part and is way ahead. The MU had the same huge problem as DS9 with an even more glaring small universe issue same goes for Sarek and his secret daughter
Fed-Klingon war: barely saw any of it Mirror universe: grim and a pointless addition to season 1 Harry Mudd: meh. Him finding new (and graphic) ways of killing Lorca was a bit off-putting The Red Angel: started out great, then it devolved into juvenile nonsense in the second half of the season, just like season 1 did. Rise of the Kelpiens: gets my vote, a rare bit of story-telling done right. Sarek family drama: sure? Person in a relationship is killed, comes back to life in a duplicate body and resents his new life? Is it really that compelling? Their whole arc is just feels like an excuse to get a gay couple in Trek. It needs to actually go somewhere now.
Secret from who exactly? His adoption of Michael is a matter of public record. So much so that some folks were kind of upset.
First we get crazy Sybok and now it turns out that Spock also has a fully human sister who we have mysteriously never heard of. I wish Trek would just leave the Sareks alone
Im probably just being a little touchy about it because I hate the whole everyone has to be connected to someone nonsense and overdoing the nostalgia characters and its not just DIS im having a go at over this
It's hardly "everyone". I think it's just Burnham and her connection is limited to family. Personal connection has been a part of story building, probably since storytelling began. Look at Star Trek, how many plots seem to hinge on a character being the old boy/girlfriend, mentor, drinking buddy, rival, what have you of a main character? Making it personal ups the drama. Would WNMHGB work as well if Gary was a random crewmember? Would Journey To Babel work as well if Sarek was just another Vulcan? I don't think DISCO is over doing the "nostalgia characters". How many have there been? Sarek, Spock, Amanda, Mudd, Pike and Number One. Any more? Other than Mudd they are connected to Michael via Spock. So really it's two: Mudd and Spock related people. Over at Picard you have Data, Riker, Troi, Hugh, Icheb and Seven. Riker and Troi are the only ones that are iffy, IMO. But they were in a great episode, so they get a pass.
