SciFiEric's 2nd Pilot USS Enterprise

It IS really good and your renders are very sharp and clear btw, the colour is really nice too.
And still quite something that a design that is so old still fascinates people, there's always someone recreating the TOS Enterprise, either to make the perfect screen/model accurate version or the wildest redesign. :D
I might be able to help with understanding that. You are correct in your observations.

I am 56 years old (about to increment) and I remember when Star Trek was first played on television. You have to understand that there were a grand total of THREE channels (plus PBS) to choose from in those days. Television used to be Black & White. Star Trek came at you in GLORIOUS COLOR! It had a star ship that sailed across the screen. The people were people! They went to wild worlds and yet everything could be resolved with compassion. The crew members defended themselves with the ultimate personal weapon, the phaser! They could TALK to each other in real time with communicators!

Our phones were wired to the wall.

Television transmission was always fuzzy with tall buildings interfering with the picture.

We were afraid that the population of the world would die in a nuclear storm.

Star Trek was a beacon of HOPE. The USS Enterprise was the embodiment of that hope. It was as much a character (if not more so) as the rest of the cast. I LOVE that ship.

This is just my way of expressing the joy I felt when I was that kid. I still love THAT ship. I enjoy THOSE stories. Those characters are people to me. They mean something to me.

I hope that helps a little bit. I'm certain I am not alone.

^^ Awesome.
And for what you told:
Star Trek here was different from almost anything else, there wasn't Dutch SF on TV, it didn't exist, I was a little kid back when I saw it first, was fascinated with Spock (ears!) and the Enterprise as well.. "spaceship" was a radically new concept. :D

I'm 46 so yeah.. I know the cold war well.. and 70's and 80's tech.. also we have a plant here that makes fuel for nuclear reactors and there was a Soviet nuke aimed at us in the cold war, there would have been a KBOOM..

But yes, I understand. :techman:

Welcome to the club!

I know I'm jumping the gun, but I started work on the neck lights and I really wanted to see what a couple of renders would look like from similar camera angles that can be found in Where No Man Has Gone Before. Obviously, the last one is just for the neck, not similar to anything ever shown on the show. I included it to show that I even put in the wire mesh for two windows on the neck, just like the real thing.

Of course, all done in Blender 3D.

I disagree. They are reflective (as everything in nature is reflective to somewhat of a degree), but not quite that much. Those look far too glossy, almost like mirrors. The specular highlight in reference images is definitely there, but it’s a bit more diffuse.

Nacelle caps look far too reflective/glossy. Is this intentional?
Nah, I'm nowhere near done. They'll be browner and the reflectivity will be toned down ... soon.
Hey, Eric. Are you using this opportunity to start learning Blender 2.8x?
Not yet! LOL! I had a LITTLE time, so I dove in with the tools I know.
I'll let Eric answer this, but it is a tough line to straddle. They were pretty darn candy apple red glossy.
Yeah, Eric. Are you? Are you? Are you? :D
LOL! No. Still tuck on Blender 2.79b
They're quite reflective and a nice deep red, I like them this way. :mallory:
I've had some compliments. People seem to like them, but I'll be toning it down soon.

Yeah, I'll make it a bit more diffuse and brown. The are very much in-progress shots.

Everyone, thanks for looking in! Wow!

So I'm stuck on the couch watching YouTube and decided to hit up Eric's Enterprise tutorial. (I should do a "translation" into 2.8. I know, big talk . 2.9 or 3 will be out by then.)

There were a lot of short keys that were just faster before. But they were weird and they hurt adoption. I get it.

But I saw you messing with the old layer system and thought "Collections are going to blow his mind!"

Bill, you flatter me by even giving my channel a watch. Thank you. You are the person I think of as the Blender person.

I look forward to learning 2.8 or 2.9. It should be something good. Thank you, again.

Damn these are so good! I can not tell you this enough. Seriously bro. So good.
The workmanship is nigh perfect.
Now for my obvious pitch... I am looking for some help concerning the TOS menagerie Captain Pike's wheelchair. would you have some insight to some drawings, diagrams or schematics? Or have you ever done a model of it?

Atolm, thank you very kindly! I cannot tell you how much your encouragement means to me.

No, unfortunately, I don't have anything for Pike's wheelchair. Your posts on this have actually piqued my curiosity. I would love to find something about it.

You definitely deserve it bro. I am always in awe of your skill.

And hopefully the mystery of the chair can pique others as well.
