Penny Dreadful-City of Angels

Eva is in the Luminaries that started a few days ago.

The demons are saints.

Though they seem older than that.

Aztec Gods?

Although I'm wishing that they are Athena and Artemis.

It's all about rebranding.

Gotta keep with the times.

I gotta say, I was worried that City of Angels was going to be a snoozefest lecture on prejudice and fascism, but, while it IS about that, the performances of the cast are electrifying! I'm looking forward to every episode now.

You an easily say the same about the various AHS series, yet no one complains the AHS name keeps getting used for each one.
I don't see the comparison. AHS is a single anthology horror series with a repertory company of actors, and very similar over-the-top atmospheres for each new story. Penny Dreadful and City of Angels are two completely different shows with completely different feels.

Looks good! How does one view this series in the US?

So it's okay for AHS because they keep reusing the same actors?

City of Angels IS in line with the original Penny Dreadful. Except it's about Central American Mythos as opposed to Victorian England Mythos. Santa Muerte instead of Dracula and things.

Whoops! Looks like you're trying to watch from outside of New Zealand. Our videos are only available to watch within New Zealand due to rights issues.

Except it's not. Not actually. The supernatural element of the story is completely superfluous and serves absolutely no relevance to the plot in any meaningful way except as an excuse to move pieces around the board. The story it's actually telling not only works just as well without any of those elements, it may actually work BETTER without them. Not to say that they couldn't come back to those elements if the show moves forward with more content, but they absolutely didn't do anything with them in this season that they couldn't have done in other ways.

The weird thing is, this ends up being a timely and well done program. The acting is mostly excellent, the storylines are engaging and the tension is built from the character dynamics really well. It took them 9 weeks to convince me to warm up to the Vega family, but at least they got there in the end.

It took weeks for me to divorce this show from the original in my mind. And taken on it's own merits, it's pretty good television. Certainly couldn't have been scheduled any better, thematically. But I will forever question giving it the Penny Dreadful title. It's a pretty shameless attempt to bank on the familiar name from the previous series, while only tacking on elements that echo that original series for flavor, and without any real impact. Had they let this stand on it's own I think Showtime and Logan would have been better served.

I was not impressed with how Logan let the original just peter out at the end and with this one apparently only giving lip service to the concept I think I'll give City of Angels a pass.

What, like have there just happen to be 4 different women all with the same intention of causing chaos and death in the city all at the same time?
