Star Trek: Vanguard

Bryan Levy

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I’m someone who read Trek books as a kid, but moved on to “grown-up books”. In the last year, I’ve done an insane read through. I’m at over a hundred, at this point. It’s basically obsessive.

But Vanguard, man, this is the show. Not a slight against Discovery or Picard at all, since they are two shows I enjoyed (Picard less than Discovery; besides the point), but I can just see this show when I read Vanguard.

I see the books more as single episodes, like I see the scenes from the books that would make one cohesive television episode rather than turning the entire novel into a season, which I don’t think would necessarily work.

A great series. Big fan.

They are indeed great books

Ditto The Vanguard books are really good . I've re- read them again last year and the stories are really good so are the spinoff books from this series.

Thanks so much. I'm glad that new readers are continuing to discover the Star Trek Vanguard series. Creating it with Marco Palmieri, and writing it in turns with Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore, was some of the best fun I've ever had as a professional writer. The finished saga remains one of the creative highlights of my career.

Part of me would love to see it adapted for television, but at the same time I fear what would happen to it during the process of adaptation. The money would be nice, but I like the saga the way it is, on the page. :-)

Even though it's unlikely to ever happen, I would love to see Vanguard get adapted into a TV series. I think it would fit in especially well on CBS All Access (in terms of style and tone).

They're probably my favorite Trek novels. Which came as a shock to me, because I'm generally not all that into the TOS era. But Vanguard made me love it.

My Trek name is Nyotarules and I approve this message!:beer:

Vanguard was and still is amazing. I can re-read it once a year and not get bored. I still get emotional reading the last novel.

I remember reading which actors the authors had in mind for several characters, and they make so much sense really.
Tommy Lee Jones as Reyes and Morgan Freeman as Fisher for example.

On the note of even the idea of adapting Vanguard in a live action form, the amusing thing for me is, even though Vanguard predates Discovery by more than a decade, I realized that I can far better picture the Vanguard characters in the Discovery-style uniform than I can the TOS style. For whatever reason, it just ends up clicking better for me.

I know Tommy Lee Jones was the authors' pick for Reyes, but I've always pictured Edward James Olmos in the role.

IIRC, OImos was actually their first choice, but they changed it when he was cast as Adama, since it would've been too similar.

If I were recasting the role to be filmed today, I'd probably lean toward Josh Brolin as Reyes. It's not perfect casting, but it's as close as I've come to being able to visualize another actor in the role.

Makes sense, since Brolin played the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones's character in Men in Black 3.

Wow, that's a great one..... Didn't think about that.
