DVD/Blu-Ray Release Email Query Re: The Cage B/W

I would think that the audio on the 16mm workprint would sound pretty bad. Remember how bad Number One’s lines in the conference room on the B&W/color version sounded? Plus the workprint probably didn’t have any audio sound effects on the audio track, or very few, so it would be just the actors voices.

Of course it would’ve been nice if CBS had rescanned and remastered the b&w/color version (of course Roddenberry’s intro would’ve just been upscaled since I think that was shot on videotape).

I finally managed to watch the b/w print today.

Apart from the original Throne voice and two additional lines of dialogue, there were some interesting differences/additions. There were one or two slightly quicker cuts from one shot/scene to another (although you'd have to know your material inside out), and you get a real sense of scenes/dialogue finshing before moving on to the next. The "prefer...To starve" was noticably not abruptly interupted by the Keeper here, and in the Picnic Scene there are at least two instances of longer holds on Pike's reaction. The most significantly longer scene was the final surface scene where some additional reaction shots were evidently removed for The Menagerie to quicken the pace and the dialogue between Pike and the Keeper. For example, a brief shot of the two Talosian advisors exiting the elevator; in the Menagerie they presumably exit when we focus on the characters/dialogue below. One unseen reaction shot in particular by one character, emphasises the words spoken by another, and also hints more clearly at that character's feelings on the matter, whereas we sadly lose this and a follow-up shot in the Menagerie and subsequent colour reconstruction, and jump ahead to the next reaction shot to quicken the pace. I *think* Vina's transformation and some reaction shots are slightly differently put together, though I'll have to double check.

Music-wise, yep The Man Trap "soon begin the experiment" cue is not present, but I think we hold on Pike's reaction longer. The music cue for Vina's punishment begins earlier during Pike's "Which means they had to have more than one of each animal" to Vina, and the Going Up cue is edited differently to the later restoration's attempt.

All-in-all it was a joy to watch the original piece in its original form!

If I can get it copied to disc is Region 2 ok? Also, are people happy to pay postage costs please? I don't have internet at home so am dubious uploading it online, plus many sites like YouTube are prone to blocking on the grounds of copyright.

We discussed this amongst the staff, and even though you are not looking to profit, we still do not allow any discussion of copying and distributing copyrighted material. We’re asking you to drop this subject and not bring it up again.

Thanks

Regardless, this find is just as important as locating the original camera negatives from that same episode. I’m certain that Gene Roddenberry would’ve approved.

How did you get a hold of it, anyway?

I doubt it, unless a portion of the proceeds were going into his pocket. Besides, Roddenberry isn't the one to worry about, CBS is.

I'm not making any money from buying the VHS. Any talk of making copies for others is against the site rules, and even if I did so, this would have been done freely to share with other fans, without a penny in my pocket. I'm simply not that kind of person. As it happens, the mods asked that particular topic to be dropped, which I have done. I'm sure discussion of the actual print/VHS is allowed though.
