It does make for a lot of hours of Star Trek, though.

Nobody around here seems to understand the "two wrongs" fallacy. I'm encountering it a lot today.

I would love to see the second wrong being done, seeing as how there is not censorship happening with these videos on this board.

I think people are responding to this assertion when they bring up earlier examples in Trek of the things Picard is being criticized for.

Trust me, you've yet to post anything that's a challenge to understand.

    Oh, God.

Anyone can post their opinion here. They just have to bear in mind that opinion can be challenged by someone else at any time. That's not the same as saying you can't post it at all.

It’s not enough to have an opinion, your opinion has to be not only acknowledged but acknowledged as “the correct one”

I've avoided RedLetterMedia's reviews of Picard and Discovery like the plague COVID-19 because I knew it was going to be Mike and Rich complaining like crotchety old men the whole time. I still think a lot of their shtick can be amusing, mainly when they're making fun of bad B-movies and weird old VHS tapes, and they've proven they can be insightful, but their brand of smirking cynicism gets kind of wearying.

I think I started to really grow disenchanted with RLM around the time "Mr. Plinkett" did his review of The Last Jedi. By that time, much of Star Wars fandom had gotten so toxic, I found it irresponsible on his part to stoke the fires of outrage over that franchise while not taking time to condemn the sort of people who bullied Kelly Marie Tran off of social media, etc. I'd go so far as to say that skirting the topic is practically tantamount to a tacit endorsement of that kind of behavior. Maybe they're not consciously pandering to those types of fans the way certain other YouTube channels are, but it seems to me like they're the one group that RLM goes out of its way to avoid offending. The most charitable (but still not that great) explanation I have for why that is is that they're too scared to piss off a large chunk of their audience. My opinion of Mike wasn't helped when he described TLJ as being about "a woke lady with pink hair who teaches us that men are wrong about everything." Maybe he was being tongue-in-cheek or maybe he was letting his true feelings out a little bit; it wasn't clear.

Well, that's just something I wanted to get off my chest, besides being a partial justification for why I'm not interested in sitting through his Picard review.

I think Mike flirts with that side of YouTube, he winks at it, but never goes full in. I don't think it was a good look when RLM followed a bunch of alt right type accounts on Twitter though. Not that I think he is alt right or anything, but there is certainly a toxic element within RLM about it. I remember people being pissed when they liked The Force Awakens, which was around the time I realised Mike maybe just prefers when companies play to his nostalgia.

What part of this are you not getting? Positive, negative, and indifferent YouTube videos will be able to be put there.

Never head of Plinkett before. It seems he's like Midnight's Edge - pointless rage videos won't get money from me XD

Feel free. Just put something in there about it being for third-party YouTube content. Something on YT from actual production sources might be considered thread-worthy...and shouldn't be lumped in with the type of content that the YT thread is meant for, in any case.

I don't find RLM worthwhile. The humor is nice, but the POV is very much Deep Fanboi and it's been a long time since I've found that lens very satisfying. For me to sit through one of these long video blog things there has to be some significant content other than a deep dive into the opinions and obsessions of the speakers - who in most cases exhibit plethoras of annoying tics that remind one why professional media personalities are worth the money that the organizations employing them pay.

I recommend Lindsey Ellis, who researches, provides context for her opinions, and perhaps most importantly actually writes before she speaks. You can learn at least a little about a lot from watching her stuff.

My response to Picard is, pretty much in total: I enjoyed a great deal of it and thought the writing was, if predictable, somewhat better than the usual Trek standard and vastly better than most of what Kurtzman's TV people have given us before. It was not as good as the best episodes of TNG, but perhaps a bit better than the average episode of any of the post-TOS Trek shows.

It certainly didn't provoke a "these people have fucked up what made this thing I love good to begin with" response from me, and I'm fully capable of having that reaction. ;)

Having said that, the wrap-up of the story was very disappointing. As others have noted the writers veered away from much of the character exploration they set up in the first part of the season with regard to Picard himself in favor of attempting a big melodramatic bang for the finale - one that fell flat. And the resolution of Picard's problem in the last episode was superficial and trivial.

RLM isn't Doomcock annoying but then again they aren't Doomcock stupidly entertaining and unintentionally funny, either.

Never mind, I've done the deed myself by merging what I think are all of the General Discussion posts from the most recent line of discussion. This new thread has the disadvantage of not having an opening post stating its purpose, as even I can't violate the Temporal Prime Directive.

Indeed. If you don't agree, it proves you just didn't understand it!

Also, a (supposedly) big viewership means that they are right. And important. And right.

If you don't acknowledge that by giving them at least one thread for themselves, that's the same as censorship. If we just repeat that often enough, it will become fact that RLM is suppressed here.

(I am just starting to truly understand phenomena like a certain president or foxy "news" channels and the like...)
