Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Don't need that video you linked to enjoy the show.

No one is saying you do. Just that it would have improved that episode and satisfied a big group of fans who enjoy ships. Simple.

Not important for every story.

You're really not very good at this debating thing. No one said it was important for every story.

What's laughable is the supreme importance being placed on ships. It rings of effects over story.

You realise you're literally in the "Starship design in Star Trek Picard" thread right? The whole point of this topic is to talk ships. No one is saying effects over story or even anything close to that.

8 different nacelle types, 5 different hull colors and markings...

My point is that there's a common design amongst the various classes.

You can tell the Galaxy, Nebula, Ambassador and Pasteur are part of the same lineage.

You can tell the Constitution refit, the Constellation and the Miranda are part of the same lineage.

Etc.

All of those ships look like they belong in the same universe. Eaves' grab bag mixture of Starfleet ship designs, don't, because there's literally no common design elements between them, beyond the obvious saucer + nacelle geometry.

Thus, the ship scene done "properly " is not a focus on effects over story?
It makes no sense.

You just agreed with me with that statement.

No, I really didn't. There are two options:

Option A) The version that aired. The storyline of the episode remains intact. The fleet arrival underwhelms and annoys a big group of fans.

Option B) The storyline of the episode remains intact. The fleet arrival is improved and pleases a big group of fans.

Which is the preferred option?

I could watch a whole movie with nothing but ship porn, but variety is key in any porn. The new ships are fine, but since they wanted to show a massive fleet, they should've added earlier classes to connect to previous shows and offer variety.

Chabon said the script called for 3 different ship classes, so it's not his fault at least.
I think the pandemic forced them to rush out the FX for the fleet.

I'd rather have new designs than rehash the old.

You didn't get new designs though. You got one, ugly, new design copied and pasted 200 times. The point of the video wasn't just to show classic ships, it was to show how the variety would have given the shot more realism and interest.

(and better camera angles, framing, use of space etc)

I think its realistic as is.

You think it's realistic that a Starfleet that has for decades been shown to have dozens of starship classes at their disposal, to suddenly turn up with 200+ of the same class?

Look, I get it. You love Star Trek and you want to love everything Star Trek they give you. But believe me, it's ok to say "Hey, I really enjoyed Star Trek Picard, I had a great time, but yeah I can see what people mean about that fleet scene. That could have been better."

Instead of always making excuses for something so obviously poorly made. It's ok to admit some things could be improved.
