Picard Season one.... I miss Star Trek

There was no other way. That was the whole point. When your back is against the wall and your only choices are surrender or cheat, what choice would you make? Picard would rather lose the war than compromise his own morality code.

I'm not necessarily convinced that is the case -- I think Picard well might be willing to compromise his morality in the context of an existential threat. But he's also the kind of guy who might, for instance, retire from Starfleet afterwards and spend a decade and a half beating himself up at his vineyard for it.

If he were under orders to do so he would. Recall that when Admiral Nechayev confronted Picard for his decision regarding Hugh, she berated him and flat out told him that he was under direct orders that if he had another opportunity to destroy the Borg he was to take it. He straightened up and said "yes sir!"

This series showed that Starfleet has enough people willing to bend their morals in a desperate situation and that's how they ended up falling for the Synth ban. They need more like Picard and should have listened to him.

They do, yes. They also need people like Picard to not give up too.

It's a two way street and I think it was illustrated quite well in the show.

I think Picard would have went rogue and hijacked the fleet to save the Romulans if he could, but he needed them to rebuild. I feel like he did just about everything possible to help them and the romulans didn't care about his effort. Actually the tie in novel has him pushing against Starfleet to help them more and more and he breaks a few rules in the process.

Indeed, one of my favorite moments in the novel is...

... when Picard unilaterally decided to dissolve the neutral zone.

Of course, that didn't make him any friends on either side of the aisle, and as we saw in the first season of Picard, created a whole new set of headaches.
