I suspect that if you watched some of the greatest surviving silent films you might be surprised by how little they fit your stereotype of silent movies.

That's quite possible. Then again, I was just having a little fun with such stereotypes -- no indication I would seriously think all silent movies were like that ... but I'll admit I'm by no means an expert on the topic.
