The Most Interesting Villains...

Looking back at VOYAGER, there could have been a lot more done with several villains/antagonists.

There are basically just 6 recurring villains... those who appear in 3 or more episodes. I didn't count the Krenim because the crew technically only briefly encountered them once.

We did get a LOT of one-offs, and I get why this occured. But I think there was a lot of potential in delving into some of the recurring ones.

On this list, who do you think was the most interesting?

(Personally, I went for the Vidiians. They had a built-morality dilemma, and they looked creepy as hell.)

The Hirogen. The Malons were boring. And the Borg were too heavily used, nothing new and special and actually Picard's foe.

My second choice are the Hirogen. They were really good and well done. A race that uses hunting as a culture and complete mindset was quite interesting. And I completely agree with you about the Malon and Borg.

I actually didn't mind the fact they encountered them so much in all those vast distances from start to finish. It made sense, given their nomadic nature. Other than the Borg and Voth, they are the only ones Voyager could legitimately encounter every season as they make their huge leaps home.

My only gripe was the speed at which they got the holographic technology from "THE KILLING GAME" all the way over to the last season. That was at least 35,000 light years apart. I don't recall their ships going THAT fast.

Favorite or most interesting? I voted for the Vidiians as most interesting for the same reasons you cited, but the Hirogen are my favorite.

I like the Devore personally. And find their anti telepathic prejudice, interesting from a worldbuilding and story perspective. Though they were a one off antagonist.

Anyway, the issue with antagonists is Voyager is continually moving, its not staying in one place. So antagonists come and go.

Seska. She was clever and cunning and more than a match for Janeway. it's just a shame they had her leave the ship, things could've been so much more interesting had they kept her around in lockdown on Voyager.

The Hirogen, closely followed by the Borg.

In contrast to most people I could have done with a lot more Borg-centered episodes. Needless to say, with a lot more Hirogen episodes too.

The Vidiians come in the third place on my list.

I loved Kashyk… it was a missed opportunity to not have at least that particular Devorean (is that the correct term?) as a recurring character, esp. with the excellent chemistry he had with Janeway.

I always felt like Seska's character would have been far more interesting had she been revealed as a Bajoran collaborator rather than a Cardassian spy. I do enjoy Cardassian Seska though especially her desperate motives to manipulate Chakotay in Maneuvers while seducing him. I never understood how a Cardassian can genetically alter their physiology to a species as different as a Bajoran. Cardassian, Bajorans, Klingons, Humans etc all have hair, lactate and many other common traits found in other primate-like species but surely there must have been some complications changing someone's genetic codes to another species? I just wanna know how Seska and Dukat managed to shrink their foreheads.

That would have been an interesting idea yes, Seska as a Bajoran, but collaborating for the Cardassians. It might have been somewhat harder however, to write an episode that would both unmask her as the traitor to the Kazon (the easy part), and a Bajoran that collaborated with the Cardies (the hard part, since they're in the Delta Quadrant and have no access to new information).

It certainly felt like there was more mileage to be had from Kashyk and the Devore. Maybe they couldn't have pursued Voyager over the course of half a season, popping up a few times in a game of cat and mouse until Voyager finally prevailed.

Frankly I'm amazed the Vaadwaur didn't become a semi-permanent foe as that certainly seemed to be the setup with their subspace corridors.

Nothing about this comment is accurate.

The Borg appeared in just 23 of Voyager's 168 episodes, but that is still nearly 3 times the number of episodes from TNG in which they appeared.

Agreed... we needed more mystery instead of having the solution. Definitely one of the best one-offs.

I always had a soft spot for the Vidiians, and I see I'm not the only one. Compelling dramatically and great visually. Really versatile, they were used quite differently in all their appearances but it always worked.

I wish Voyager had done more Hirogen-style arcs, they were really onto something with that, the consecutive weeks dealing with a single alien species' territory.
