Really! I didn't know he was a pothead. Now I want a scene of Raffi and Picard lighting up together.

While it was happening, it really pissed me off how Picard treated Raffi (even when she called him JL). But by the end of the season, he told her he loved her and she was the last person he spoke to as biological body died. I guess that kind of made up for him showing up at her trailer with wine, the clapping after ending relationship with Emmy, his disregard for her Agnes as spy and murderer.

I would let auntie Raffi take care of me:)

Michelle Hurd recently joined Jonathan Del Arco on his podcast, Hollywood Caucus. Here it is on Apple Podcasts (it's also available on Stitcher, Spotify, and most other platforms).

It's a pretty fascinating and wide-ranging discussion, well worth a listen. Naturally, they get onto the subject of Picard, and Hurd explains how Raffi's status as an addict influenced her decision to take on the role. Her insight made me appreciate the character more than I already did.

Very touching, the stuff about her father...

ETA: Gods, she's a total SJW.

    Awesome!

I like her. I'm looking forward to some additional character development next season for everyone, Raffi Included. She's probably my 2nd favorite new character after Rios.

    I like her a lot.

I'm doing a re-watch of the whole season and just got done with Stardust City Rag. It occurred to me that we might see Raffi's son Gabriel again, because in SCR, he scoffs at her assertion that there was more to the Mars attack than was acknowledged in public. And now we know that Raffi was right all along.

I'm reading the prequel novel Last Best Hope and a sub-plot running through is Raffi making the choice to work with Picard as his XO on the Romulan mission and the deterioration of her relationship with her family and her subsequent drinking as a result.

Although it has left me wondering why she's wearing yellow in the flashbacks when all XO's apart from Spock wore command.

Its the 24th century, white people having names that do not reflect their phenotype or ethnic origin should not raise any eyebrows...

From a black lady with a Celtic surname....

Sisko is a Finnish name - Captain Sisko was not born in Finland...

I like the arc of her character starting as someone deeply paranoid, blaming Picard for abandoning her, yet trying not to become close to him again, and yet helping him all at the same time. Then we see her go through a pendulum of recovery, and ultimately to some sort of content state.

    ^^ Obviously, quite a few.

When it comes to friends, Raffi reminds us of both the old and new.

She is new to us and a new friend to Picard compared to Data, Riker and Troi, but she is old compared to Soji, Rios, Elnor and Jurati. In one character she tells the TNG fans that time has moved on and the Picard we thought we knew is not the Picard we now see.

This one quit Starfleet and failed those Romulans he promised relief in his address to their Senate and those Romulans including young Elnor he left on the refugee world.

This one quit Star Fleet and failed his XO, a woman who stood by him to the detriment of her career, her health and her relationship to her family.

Picard could barely acknowledge his guilt over Data's sacrifice 20 years ago, but in Raffi we see the guilt he wilfully ignored for the last 14 years.

This season was not only about forgiving himself regarding Data, but also regarding Raffi.

Make new friends, but keep the old

Those are silver, these are gold.

New made friendships, like new wine,

    Age will mellow, and refine.

Friendships that have stood the test,

Of time and change are surely best.

Brow may wrinkle, hair go gray

    Friendship never knows decay.

For 'mid old friends, tried and true

Once more we our youth renew

But old friends, Alas! May die,

New friends must their place supply

    Cherish friendship in your breast,

New is good, but old is best.

Make new friends, but keep the old

Those are silver, these are gold.

    :adore:

Raffi is silver rimmed with gold.

So Raffi is the third Trek character receiving poems: Spot, Brian Brophy and now Raffi Musiker!

I liked Raffi quite a bit. I found her to be a likable and sympathetic character. My heart ached for her. Michelle Hurd did a great job conveying the suffering Raffi endured since Picard retired and her whole world collapsed in on itself like a dying star. I felt like out of all of Picard's characters she was really fleshed out over SSN 1. (granted, I do feel the show would benefit a little bit more by taking the Michael Piller approach of having the story service the characters and not vice-versa. I miss my little morality plays) I would say Capt Rios is up there as well. I have nothing against Jurati or Elnor. I have been seeing Alison Pill in everything lately, it's a little wierd. (The Newsroom, American Horror Story, Snowpiercer) But she is an always welcome addition!

I am enjoying Picard very much like a fine cup of earl grey and look forward to the suprises Season 2 has to offer! :techman:

Did they really say or imply that snakeleaf is more or less like marijuana? Becaue I agree the dramatic addiction angle wouldn't make much sense then...

I don't believe it's explicitly stated, but to me anyways that is the vibe I was getting from it.

I think its less the dramatic addiction angle and more to emphasize that these characters are flawed and hurting, and how they are coping with that pain in this perfect future. My impression is that the writers are trying to convey that Raffi is a character who is a good person by nature in Gene Roddenberry's idyllic society, but they use a controlled substance to escape reality because in the future reality is harsh. It is not as much a Utopia as it may have been in the 2370s.

This is in stark contrast to Gene Roddenberry's "No drugs, no money, no conflict, everyone accepts death and everyone is happy in the future" restrictions he placed on the TNG writers and actors.

Michelle Hurd just showed up on my rewatch of ER! She is right about the age she'd have been when Picard resigned.

Totally random: I love how Raffi managed to strong arm that Captain and friend of hers to give La Sirena permission to go into Romulan Space. That scene is gold.

There is no character in Picard, nay in any Star Trek series than Deep Space Nine that I am a fan of — they can have good and interesting plots, but there are no characters like, say, Garak, Weyoun, or Dukat, that are interesting as character alone.
