ST canon is inconsistent and contradictory.

That isn't exactly canon.

Although that does make the most sense, when it is considered that Khan’s influence was from Asia (i.e Vietnam) to the Middle East/North Africa. According to “Space Seed” that is. And those nations are a part of what it called the Third World, even though the Cold War is over and related language should have fallen out of use.

But still, it's a fan explanation for inconsistencies in canon, and that's alright and cool.

Yet I'd still say that a devastating war fought by genetically enhanced people over a large part of Eurasia that "bombs entire population out of existence" would have enough repercussions for the rest of the world that it would even be noticeable in the US. Or at least come up in conversation. Look at how often WW 2 comes up in conversation.

Spock also points out that it is "a strange and violent period" in human history. And not acknowledging entire populations being bombed out of existence would be strange, war-weary populations or otherwise.

Hell didn't Gene try to say OG ST was basically warped in-universe media to make up for a few inconsistencies on its own sake?
Not exactly but that was the idea from the novelization. Gene was already working towards a more evolved humanity idea and seemed to want to distance himself from TOS and treat it as an in universe dramatic recreation of Kirk's mission.

I recall a TNG episode where a Romulan was named "Pe'taq". Didn't that become a Klingon swear word later on in the series? :guffaw:

Oh, okay, the Romulan was named "Patahk" but the etymology* behind what Klingon first came up with the word Pe'taq must have been a doozy. In terms of production concerns, the name sounded so cool for "The Enemy" they repurposed it elsewhere while tweaking the spelling.

* in-universe, like it being due to some commander named Patahk a couple centuries earlier and it caught on? That fits into this thread's lack of continuity since 23rd century Klingons and Romulans made a peace and trade treaty despite Commander Tolpak telling Chancellor Dorcon "We know you made a swear out of the name of one of our better generals but that's small beans. Also, who just fasted?" (since jokes about expelling the result of chemical processes involved in the digestive process, with often an audible noise that's perceived as disgusting (never mind the smell) by most are apparently highly amusing as well as averting.. But being a fan of double entendre myself, it's all good.)

Exactly. If the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s were strictly canon for the 90s shows there should have been mention of them in the various episodes when they traveled to the 90s/2000s.
Even in the episode of DS9 where they went to the 2020s there's a good probability that there would have been veterans of the Eugenic Wars, maybe among the forgotten people in the Sanctuary Districts. Because let's face it, if a new global power arose through warfare, swallowing up much of Eurasia, I don't exactly see the already established global powers (including the USA) sitting by and watching. Or first/second generation refugees.

That's why I'm more inclined to see the various shows as having "broad strokes" canonicity for one another.

Is that guy jumping out the window because he has no money, a crisis of faith, or is he avoiding military service?

Also, Eurasia IS most of the world....

I don't know if this has been discussed before

As a matter of fact, it has. And you should know this because you started a thread yourself that led to a similar sort of discussion before. Right here, back in July.

so I'll mention it. [...] Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? Yeah. "So I'll mention it" reminds me of Columbo. "Oh, by the way..."

It also reminds me of this:

I’d say just be grateful it’s nothing like that other franchise, Doctor Who. I stopped watching after Peter Capaldi left as the writing and acting had gone terribly downhill, but from what I’ve heard the current head writer has retconned it so the previous 57 years of canon are now totally redundant. If they did that on Trek, I... daren’t even imagine.

I'd rather they retcon it than constantly trying to retrofit 60s and 80s era understanding of technology in to a 21st century show. Or, more importantly, I'd rather they completely reboot Trek and continue forward with the optimistic future idea without cramming in WW3 and the Eugenics Wars and on and on.
